I tried to calm my breathing long enough to hear what Scarlett was saying, but the truth was that I stopped listening after she told me I was going into town with Kai

I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. We were going to be mated for fucks sake, but I didn’t think it would happen so soon. I was fucking terrified, and my heart was pounding raply inside of my chest.

I didn’t have the faintest clue on how to act around my mate and

“Daisy!” Scarlett’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I turned to her.

“Yes?”

She sighed softly, making her way over to me. “Are you okay?”

I nodded. “I’m fine, can you repeat what you were saying?”

She stared at me for a long minute before sitting at the edge of the bed, her hands placed neatly in her lap.

“Sit with me, Daisy.”

“I thought we had to leave.”

“Kai will wait.”

“Are you sure?”

I wasn’t keen on leaving the king waiting. If it were Lucas, I’d get an earful. He hated being left waiting, which was ironic considering he had a nasty habit of always leaving me waiting. He’d always claim he had pack work that kept him busy.

In hindsight, he probably just didn’t want to spend time with me

“Kai doesn’t mind, I promise.” She tapped the spot next to me. “don’t bite.”

I hesitated for a moment before sitting down. “Is something wrong?”

“I know you’re nervous. Honestly, I can’t even imagine how nervous you are, I’ve never had to fake a relationship before.”

My spine straightened. “I’m not-”

“Relax,” she assured me with a soft smile. “Kai already told me. We practically grew up together so he tells me everything. I know all about the deal and the revenge plot.”

For the first time, I didn’t know what to stay.

I just stared at her, waiting for the judgment, but it never came. knew how seriously lycans took mating bonds.

As wolves, we weren’t taught much about them, but the one thing we were told was never to come between a lycan and its mate. They would burn the world down for their mate without a second thought, and here I was disrespecting that bond.

“You probably think I’m a horrible person,” I mumbled and her rows furrowed.

“No, I don’t think that” She sounded offended at the prospect. “lon’t know you, Daisy. I don’t know what you’ve been through and it would be cruel of me to judge you.”

“You don’t have to lie-”

“I’m not lying. I don’t know who made you this way. I don’t know what made you so distrusting, but I’m on your side. I want to help.”

“How?”

“I’m going to teach you everything you need to know before you go out there.”

I turned to her sharply. “You’re going to help me lie to your pack”

She shrugged. “I guess so.”

“Why would you do that?”

“It’s like I said before, I trust Kai.” She paused for a moment before adding. “But I do need to warn you, Kai is like my brother, and if I find out that you’re working with your pack to hurt him, you will make an enemy out of me.”

It was terrifying how quickly she could go from sweet and comforting to terrifying. I tried to speak, to assure her that I bore no ill will towards Kai, but my lip wouldn’t move. My wolf registered her as a threat, and fight or flight had kicked in.

“Are we on the same page?” she asked and I nodded. Just like that the smile was back on her face. “Good, now let’s get you ready for the big show.”

After her long speech, I thought I was ready, but the moment I saw Kai waiting for me by the car, my steps faltered, and my heart rate picked up.

Now that I was aware of the mating bond, I could feel it pulsing every time we were close. It was alive, drawing us to each other, highlighting every move he made, every word he spoke, his scent in the air.

It was maddening.

“I should’ve known you’d take your time,” Kai drawled.

I waited for the yelling, for the anger, but it never came. Instead, he turned to me.

“You look beautiful.”

My cheeks burned a bright shade of red. Beautiful was not the word I would use to describe myself. In fact, I couldn’t remember anyone ever calling me that before. My father never commented on my looks, and Lucas had never paid me a compliment that wasn’t directed at my tits or ass.

Still, I knew it would be rude to not respond so I gave him a small smile. “Thank you.”
