At the expression on her face, I knew that something was wrong

It took all of my self-control to pull away from her, and even more to drag myself into the car. Daisy sat in the passenger side, her hands folded neatly in her lap as she avoided looking at me. I could feel her disappointment and sadness, and I hated that there was nothing I could do to fix it.

I drove to the pack house where Scarlett was already waiting outside. The guards going with me were ready and positioned in their car. Daisy made to step out of the car but I locked the doors, effectively trapping her inside.

“Kai, you have to leave-”

“Come with me,” I whispered.

It was a last ditch attempt, and I knew it was selfish of me to ask of her, especially when she’d already been through so much in that pack, but I couldn’t walk away without at least trying first.

Her eyes widened in surprise at my request, her mouth falling open a little. The air seemed to stretch thin between us as I waited anxiously for her response. If she were to refuse, I’d leave and never bring it up again.

“I’m not even packed, Kai,” she whispered softly. “The pack will be left unattended.”

“Scarlett can handle the pack. It’s only for a few days, and selfishly, I packed a bag for you already.”

She laughed under her breath. “You planned this all, didn’t you?

I shrugged, not even bothering to deny it. I’d spent the whole morning hoping she’d change her mind of her own accord, but seeing as she hadn’t, I decided to take the initiative.

She chewed on the inside of her cheek, glancing between me and the guards outside the car. Seconds ticked by, but it felt like hours. Finally, she let out a resigned sigh and nodded slowly

“You can’t leave me alone though,” she warned. “I don’t want to be alone around any of them.”

“You’ll never have to be,” I promised. “If I can’t be with you, Danien will be.”

She sighed deeply. “I guess we’re going back to my pack.”

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t fucking pleased.

I finally unlocked the car and Daisy stepped out, trying and failing to hide the smile on her face. Scarlett rushed up to her instantly, and pulled her aside presumably to gossip.

While they spoke, I made sure to go over things with the guards Now that Daisy was officially coming with us, I needed to ensure that her safety was paramount. There was no telling what we’d face in that pack and I needed to ensure that she’d be

safe no matter what.

We finished the rundown in five minutes, around the same time Daisy and Scarlett returned. Daisy sat in the car while Scarlett made her way over to me.

“You should’ve invited me to the ceremony,” she mumbled.

“I didn’t even know I was doing it until this morning”

She huffed, crossing her hands over her chest “Well, I’m going the and tell Damien that I was there. Play along.”

I’d never understand her and Damien’s relationship. One second they were fighting, and the next, they were friends.

Chapter 61

“Whatever.” I agreed “Keep a grip on things, okay?”

“I will. I’ll even keep an eye on your ex.”

“Why would you need to keep an eye on Eva?”

She shrugged. “Probably because she’s been watching from the window since you arrived here.”

I glanced over her shoulder and sure enough, Eva was standing by the lobby window. Her eyes widened when she saw me and she waved. I waved back before turning to Scarlett.

“If there’s any issue-”

“I’ll call you.” she assured me. “Go, your mate is waiting.”

I sat in the driver’s seat and Daisy turned to me. “I think your ex wants to speak to you.”

Sure enough, Eva was already walking out of the pack house.

“I’ll talk to her after,” I said as I stared the car. “We have a trip to take.”

As I drove off, I caught a glimpse of Eva’s face in the background and the frown that marred it.

The rest of the drive with Daisy was fucking amazing. She filled the air with nervous laughter and stories from her childhood. I let her speak, absorbing every bit of information like a man starved. The breeze blew her hair and the sun rays cast a warm halo around her face. She looked like a fucking angel.

“Are you even listening to me?” she asked, frowning slightly.

“I am, I swear.”

“You’ve been staring at me.”

“I have.” I didn’t try to deny it. “You are fucking beautiful.”

Her cheeks tinged pink. “Stop avoiding my question.”

“I heard everything you said, princess. I just enjoy looking at you

Her cheeks grew even darker and she turned away from me sharply. “The border is just a few feet away. I can see it.”

She was right.

The large trees that marked the entry way into the border were right ahead of us. In fact, the first set of guards had already passed through. I glanced over at Daisy, hating the furrow between her brows and the slight frown on her face.

“Are you regretting the choice to come?” I asked and she shook her head quickly.
