The pack was always busy. The towns were always filled with people going about their day in the noisiest way possible, but as we drove through there was not a soul in sight and it filled me with little reprieve.
We drove straight for the pack house and the first thing I noticed was that the insignia of the Northern pack that typically rested on the front doors was gone, and in its place was the royal seal. Guards bearing the seal stood by the entrance, arms in hands and standing right in their center was Damien.
He was the most casually dressed in jeans and a loose shirt. His hands were crossed over his chest, but I knew better than to underestimate him. He was a trained warrior after all, and he was a lycan.
As soon as the car pulled to a stop, Damien was at my door in an instant. He opened it and pulled me into a firm hug. His strong arms nearly cut off my air supply and his boisterous laugh filled my ears.
“Welcome to the family, Daisy,” he said as he pulled me out of the car.
My legs dangled in mid-air for a few seconds before he finally placed me on the ground.
“I’m pissed that you didn’t wait until I was back to do all that.”
A lot of my unease lifted at his presence. “Next time we’ll take you into consideration. How are things here?”
“As good as can be. The pack is uneasy though. Stay alert as long as you’re here.”
He gave my shoulder a small squeeze before turning towards Kal A look passed between them, one that I didn’t understand. Kai exhaled deeply before walking over to me and pressing his lips to my temple.
“I need to see the pack council,” he whispered to me. “Damien will stay with you.”
“Right now?” I asked and he nodded. “Can’t it wait?”
“Apparently not. I’ll be back as soon as I can, okay?”
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, but I understood that he came here for business, not for a vacation. I nodded slowly. He hesitated for a moment, as if he wanted to say something. At the last minute, he decided against it, kissed my head once more before disappearing back into the car with some other guards.
“Come on,” Damien said, tugging my arm. “Let’s get you settled in.”
A guard took my box into the house.
It was surprisingly large. Kai must have packed it when I was asleep because there was no way I’d have missed him taking that much of my clothes out of the house otherwise.
The pack house was just as I remembered it; wooden doors, stone walls and old couches. It was like stepping right back into my past. I’d never actually lived here, but I’d spent enough time that I knew it like the back of my hand.
We were led into the Alpha’s quarters and I stopped short when Damien reached the door leading to the Alpha’s room.
“Are you okay?” he asked and I nodded slowly. “This is where youll be sleeping.”
I swallowed deeply.
I’d never been in this room before, it was one of the few places at was out of reach for me. It had belonged to Lucas’ father, but I couldn’t help but wonder if Lucas had ever slept in here after his father died.

Chapter 02
“If you’re uncomfortable, we can find somewhere else.”
“No.” I shook my head. “It’s fine. They can drop the bags, I think need a minute.”

Damien nodded in understanding and led me away from the doors. We headed back into the common area and towards the
kitchen.
“Sit down,” he said, gesturing to the counters.
I watched as he made his way through the cabinets like he’d lived here for years and pulled out a mug. He made a cup of coffee and slid it over to me.
“Thank you,” I mumbled, lifting it to my lips.
“I have to say, I’m surprised you actually came. I thought you’d refuse.”
“I did at first. I only agreed this morning.”
He chuckled under his breath. “Being marked will do that to you It would’ve been so hard to leave him after being newly marked.”
That was part of it, yes, but there was more to it than the mark. I realized that I needed to be here. There were too many questions I had, too much unfinished business that would haunt me for the rest of my life.
“Have you seen the pack members yet?” I asked and he nodded.
“A couple. Most of them have chosen to stay in their homes and avoid us. I think they’re watching to see what we do. They don’t seem to trust us.”
“I don’t blame them. We were taught that lycans are cruel destroyers. They probably think you’re going to displace them.”
I could understand their fear. It was how I felt when I first met Kai. I was worried that he’d dispose of me at any given time. If he wasn’t my mate, I would’ve been more terrified.
“Hopefully they realize that we’re not their enemies,” he said finally.
“I hope so too.”
Silence stretched between us for a minute before he finally spoke.
“There’s something else, isn’t there?” he asked and I nodded. “What is it?”
“My father. Have you seen him?”
He was hesitant for a moment before nodding. “I have.”
“I need to see him.”
“Daisy-”
