Chapter 64
Chapter 64
Kai didn’t return until the sun had gone down
He walked in, his eyes tired, his hair a mess and his shirt a bit rumpled. I was seated in the living room with Damien playing card games when I smelled him.
I watched him warily cross the length of the room to meet me. He sat next to me, wrapping an arm around me and pressing a kiss to the side of my head. He smelled like fuel and something else that I couldn’t quite make out.
“I take it the meeting didn’t go so well?” I asked and he groaned.
“You have no fucking idea. It was like talking to a group of toddlers. I hated every fucking second of it. Have they always been so unreasonable?”
I shrugged. “I’ve never met with the council.”
His brows furrowed in confusion. “Not even when-”
I shook my head. “It never got to that. I was automatically deemed to be in the wrong and banished. I never got a trial.”
His jaw clenched in anger. “I fucking hate your father.”
“Tell me about it,” Damien mumbled. “I want to kill the bastard.
Kai’s brows rose as he glanced between Damien and I. “Is there something I’m missing?”
I saw the regret hit Damien in real time. He opened his mouth to backtrack, but I held up a hand to stop him. I’d handle Kai.
He shot me a grateful look before scurrying out of the living room, leaving kai and I alone.
“I went to see him today,” I said softly.
Kai stilled. “What? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t want you to worry. You’re already getting upset”
“Of course I’m getting upset, you went to see the bastard who threw you out without telling me and I know it went horribly because I can see it all over your face. Fuck, Daisy-”
“Can we not argue right now?” I cut him off. “I’ve had a shitty da, and I just want to be here with you.”
Playing that card was a low blow, but I truly didn’t have the energy to fight with him. This pack was already bringing out the worst in us and I’d be damned if I let it ruin the beautiful thing we’d built.
“Fine,” he sighed deeply. “But this conversation isn’t over.”
I nodded. “Agreed.”
“I have to address the pack tomorrow.”
I sat up straight. “What?”
“I’m their new Alpha. I need to address them as such and they have to swear fealty to me.”
“Will they do it?”
“Not everyone.”

Chapter 64
“What happens to those who don’t?”
He shrugged. “Let’s wait and see.”
I couldn’t sleep all night.
I lay next to Kai, his hands wrapped tightly around my waist and his soft breathing by my neck I was worried about the meeting with the pack. I knew these people, I knew how they thought, I knew how they acted. Majority of them weren’t going to accept Kai, and the last thing I wanted was an uprising.
We had so much on our hands already, if it were up to me, we’d bandon the pack and leave them to their devices.
By the time the sun came up, my eyes were heavy and my chest was tight. I moved on autopilot, getting dressed in a casual pair of jeans and a floral top before heading for the dining room with Kai.
Damien was already seated there, his coffee untouched in front of him. It was clear that he also had a hard time sleeping.
“We need to go over the security for today,” he said as soon as he noticed Kai and I heading down the steps. “The pack is quiet today, but that doesn’t mean they won’t riot later.”
I swallowed deeply. The thought of a riot filled me with dread.
“Whatever you do, I need soldiers here at the pack house with Daisy.”
“What?” my head snapped over to Kai. “I’m coming with you.”
“Daisy-”
“I’m not going to stay here while you’re out there addressing the back, and if you try to lock me in here, I’m going to break out and come anyways.”
He frowned. “I’m trying to keep you safe, Daisy. Anything could happen and I need to know you’re away from the conflict.”
“I’m staying with you, Kai.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “If you try to stop me, I swear I will never forgive you.”
His jaw was clenched, his eyes hard, and for a minute, I thought he’d call my bluff, but he sighed deeply.
“I want guards on her,” he told Damien who nodded. “At least three of them.”
“Done.”
We went over the rest of security, barely taking bites out of our breakfast.
The meeting was to hold around ten, so we left the pack house before eight. By the time we got to the town square, it was already packed with people. I could feel the unease and the tenson in the air. My heart hammered in my chest and for a moment, I wondered if it would’ve been better if I’d stayed back
At exactly ten, Kai took the podium.
From the comer, I watched the faces of the pack members. The were looks of worry, disdain and fear. Kai wasn’t saying anything abnormal, but they weren’t receiving it.
“How can they?” my wolf asked “They’ve been taught to fear hug”
“So what can be do
“Him? Nothing, but maybe you can help”
“How?”
