Her words were like lead in the pit of my stomach. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words would come out. I just stared at her blankly, wondering if this was all some kind of prank or if Kai had actually lied to me.
“Thank you for telling me,” I said finally. “I appreciate it.”
“I’m really sorry if I overstepped, I thought you knew.”
“It doesn’t matter. I can call someone to take you home if you want.”
Thankfully, she understood the dismissal for what it was. “Don’t worry about it, I think I’ll just head out.”
She walked out of the room and I watched her disappear down the stairs. I vaguely heard the door shut behind her as she left the house and only then did I actually feel like I could breathe.
My chest was tight as I played her words over again in my head. part of me wanted to call Kai up and scream, but I forced myself to remain unmoving. Kai had never once lied to me in the entire time we’d been together. Surely there was a logical explanation for everything… right?
Loud ringing filled the air, making me jump. I glanced at the caller ID and scoffed. Speak of the devil.
My fingers hovered over the decline button, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.
“Hear him out first,” my wolf whispered. “He deserves that much
“I know, I just… what if she’s telling the truth?”
“He’s allowed to have a past, Daisy.”
“Yes, but he isn’t allowed to lie to me about it. I would have preferred to hear it from him and not her.”
“Well then, this is the only chance for him to explain.”
I broke off the mind link and glanced down at my phone that hall stopped ringing. With a sigh, I dialed Kai’s number back.
He picked up immediately. “Hey, princess, did I wake you?”
“No, I’ve been up for a while.”
“I got an interesting text from Scarlett this morning. What the hell was Eva doing at our house?”
“She wanted a sleepover,” I shrugged before quickly realizing he couldn’t see me. “I tried to send her away but she wouldn’t leave.”
“Fuck, I’m sorry, I’ll talk to her-”
“Actually, I wanted to talk to you first,” I cut him off. “Is there any hing that I need to know about Eva?”
He was silent for a moment. “I don’t understand. Did something happen?”
I debated telling him everything, but I hated conversations overhe phone because I wouldn’t be able to see his face and tell if he’s lying or not. Besides, the chances of him rushing back att hearing something like this were high, and there was too much that needed to be handled in that pack. I couldn’t risk it.
“No,” I lied. “I was just asking. Forget about it.”
“Daisy-”

It took me a while to finally get out of the room. I spent far longer in the bathroom than I needed to. My mind kept going in circles because I didn’t know who to believe. I would’ve asked Scarlett or Damien, but the truth was, I couldn’t tell if they’d tell me the truth or just go straight to Kai.
By the time I finally got out, Scarlett was in the dining room eating a bowl of cereal.
“Want to tell me why Kai called me panicking this morning because e thought something was wrong with you?” she drawled.
I shrugged. “He’s just being dramatic. Don’t worry about it.”
She sat up straighter, clearly not believing me. “Are you sure? You don’t look okay. Is this about Eva? Don’t let her get to you. She was friends with Kai for a long time, she knows this house like the back of her hand. It doesn’t mean anything-”
“I really don’t want to talk about it.”
“Did she say something to you? Come to think of it, I didn’t see her this morning when I-”
I was saved from having to respond to her by knocking on my door.
I’d never ran away from a conversation so fast. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Scarlett shake her head before following me. At this point, I didn’t even care who was at the door, I just pulled it open without a care in the world.
I stopped short when I realized it was Alaric and I was wearing nothing but one of Kai’s oversized hoodies and a pair of booty shorts.
The older man looked me up and down slowly. “Well, this is surprising.”
I swallowed deep. “I didn’t expect you to be here or I would’ve changed into-”
