My Mate Is The Lycan King (Daisy and Kai) novel Chapter 71

Chapter 71

The counselors argued in front of me.

65 vouchoirs

There were four of them including Daisy’s father. It was their job to give advice to the Alpha. Their voices rose higher, each one demanding to be heard. The more they spoke, the greater a headache formed until it felt like someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull.

I pressed my fingers to my temples, hoping to ease the ache.

Damien was supposed to handle this meeting, but at the last minute, I decided to send him over to the guards. I wanted to vet them and see who the most reliable were as well as take a good look at their current patrol schedule and switch it up.

The argument continued, louder this time until I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Enough!” I yelled and they both went silent. “For fucks sake. I asked for a list of the most important people in the pack, I didn’t ask you to bicker like fucking children.”

To their credit, they managed to look a bit sheepish.

They’d turned a simple conversation into an argument about who they thought would be the best fit for Alpha. It would’ve been better if they were suggesting good candidates, but they were vying for the position. As if I was going to step down as Alpha for any of them.

“Give me an update on the pack,” I said, sitting up straight. “At least you should be able to do that right.”

For a long minute, they were all silent.

“Is there a reason no one is speaking?” I asked. “Don’t you do regular check-ins with the pack?”

More silence, before Daisy’s father spoke. “No, we don’t. If they have an issue, they will come to us.”

“How the fuck are they supposed to come to you if you don’t check in with them?”

He shrugged.

It was a miracle that the pack hadn’t fallen apart already. They were barely surviving as it was. The guards were treated like shit. Their accommodation reminded me of something out of a nightmare. It as tiny, cramped, and they barely got enough food. The pack members were basically left to their own devices. It was like there were two different packs: the commoners.

and the rulers.

“Starting today you will have weekly check-ins with the pack,” I ordered.

They began to protest, but I ignored them.

“You will take notes of all their problems and you will do well to fix it. If you do not, then I will be more than happy to find other people to take over your positions as counsellors.”

I could sense the displeasure. Hell, it was written all over their faces, but they loved their jobs too much to refuse. They nodded grimly, each man clenching his jaw in anger.

“Is that all?” Daisy’s father asked.

“Yes, you may all leave.” They began to rise but I stopped him. “Except you.”

The others murmured, curiosity filling their gazes as they slowly filed out of the room. I waited until the door had shut behind the last one before I finally turned to my father-in-law.

It felt weird to call him that. The bastard was no father to Daisy. He may have brought her into this world, but he’d done nothing to deserve that title. Seeing him filled me with a murderous rage, and it took everything in me to keep my lycan back from doing something stupid like ripping his head off even though he probably deserved it.

“Sit,” I said, gesturing to the chair he’d vacated. “We may be here for a while.”

“I’d rather stand,” he said smoothly, crossing his arms over his chest.

I shrugged, not willing to argue. “Suit yourself.”

Dragging over my laptop, I flipped it open and hit play on a video.

I watched as the blood drained from his face as he watched it. It was the same video Alaric had shown me all those weeks ago, the one of him with the hunters.

You know what this is, don’t you?” I asked and he nodded. “Are you going to explain on your own or are you going to wait for me to ask?”

“I was delivering a message for my Alpha,” he said simply, his face like a stone. “That isn’t a crime.”

“No, but fraternizing with the hunters is. The moment I got this video, I earned the right to kill you where you stand. The only reason I haven’t is because of your daughter.”

I crossed my arms over my chest.

“Right now, she wants nothing to do with you. Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t kill you.”

He swallowed deeply, and for the first time since I met him, he looked terrified for his life.

I’d made threats before, but none without a legal reason. I could’ve killed him long ago, but the paperwork would’ve been insane to deal with. Now, all I had to do was show the world these pictures and everyone would clamor for his death… even his pack.

“I didn’t know they were hunters,” he said softly. “All I did was deliver a message.”

“What message?”

“I don’t know. It was an envelope and I was instructed not to open it.”

“Who gave the instructions?”

“Lucas, but you must have it all wrong. He was an impulsive boy but he would never put the pack in danger like this. Perhaps he was trying to get them off our back.”

I snorted. “Even you don’t believe that.”

He swallowed but said nothing.

“Go home, and when you do, you will send in a letter of resignation from the council-”
