Chapter 72
The resignation came first thing the next morning.

To be fair, I wasn’t expecting him to go through with it. I was in the middle of my morning coffee when Damien walked into the dining room, his hands crossed over his chest.
“What did you do?” he asked.
I slowly lowered the mug. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Daisy’s father. The man is too prideful to let go of his one tie to power without being forced. Did you threaten him?”
“I’ve threatened him multiple times in the little time I’ve known him,” I said simply. “If he decided to step down, it was definitely his choice.”
“How will Daisy feel about that?”
“I’m sure she will understand that her father did whatever he thought was best.”
He hummed, taking the seat next to me. A maid rushed over to lay a stack of pancakes in front of him. He thanked her with a smile and a wink that had her cheeks turning pink before she ran off.
“You need to stop flirting with everything that moves.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he drawled, taking a bite from his food. “All I did was thank the woman who fed me.”
“Flirting with the staff doesn’t make for a good Alpha.”
He went deathly still at my words. “No.”
“I haven’t even-”
“I don’t need you to finish. I don’t want the title. I enjoy the freedom of being Beta. I love being able to leave the pack whenever I need to. I will not be strapped down and shackled to a group of people, much less this ungrateful bunch.”
I exhaled deeply.
I knew the conversation wouldn’t go over well with him. I’d anticipated his response before I asked but that didn’t stop me from trying. I had no intentions of being here for longer than two weeks, but as it stood, the chances of me finding someone to replace me within those two weeks were growing slimmer by the day.
“It’s temporary,” I tried to bargain. “Until I find someone else.”
“I have never refused you before, Kai, but I have to now. I have a life back at the palace.”
“So do I. I have a mate, and I can’t leave her to take care of this pack.”
He crossed his arms over his chest. “I really don’t want to.”
“I know that, I just need someone I can trust.”
He shoved a forkful of pancakes into his mouth. “You’re lucky the girls here are hot.”
The conversation was far from over, but for now, we’d come to a mutual understanding.
Once I was done with my coffee, I headed out for the day. I was headed to the pack offices to take a look at some of the files

and the current financial situation of the pack. On the way, I decided to dial Daisy.
I hadn’t heard from her since she abruptly ended the call yesterday. I called Scarlett to make sure she was okay. I figured she was just upset about Eva barging into the house unannounced. I made a mental note to speak to Eva in person. I know Daisy said not to, but I couldn’t just let it slide.
“Hey,” she said as soon as she picked up. “I’d left my phone in the kitchen.”
“Hi, princess.” Hearing her voice calmed me in a way I didn’t think was possible. “How are things over there?”
“Good, it’s a bit boring if I do say so myself. I didn’t realize that being Alpha meant a shit ton of paperwork. I feel like I’m drowning.”
I could almost picture her dramatic expression. The corner of my lip twitched, and a pang of yearning hit me right in the center of my chest. There was nothing I wouldn’t give just to be there with her.
“It’s just for a while longer. I’ll be home soon,” I assured her. “Is Eva gone?”
She hummed. “She left this morning. Right before-”
She trailed off, her voice growing silent.
“Before what?” I asked.
“Nothing, sorry, I lost my train of thought.”
Something inside of me said she was lying, especially when she quickly changed the subject back to the paperwork. This was one thing I hated about conversations over the phone, I couldn’t see her, I couldn’t tell if she was saying the truth or not.
“Daisy-”
“Shit,” she cursed. “I have to go right now. I have a meeting with the planner for the mating ceremony. I’ll call you later okay, bye.”
I’d barely gotten the chance to say goodbye when she hung up the phone.
This was the second time she hung up on me abruptly. If I wasn’t worried before, I definitely was now. I had half a mind to drive back to the pack this morning and demand that she speak to me. Unfortunately for me, I was already in front of the pack office and I had a shit ton of work to do.
The Alpha’s office was a fucking mess.
Papers were strewn all over the tables and files were left unattended to from months ago. The more I found out about this pack, the more shocked I was.
I began arranging the files first by order of importance. I was in the middle of doing that when I heard a phone ring. I checked mine, but it was perfectly blank. I followed the sound, moving papers around until I found a sleek black phone hidden underneath the mess.
The number wasn’t saved, but I answered it anyway.
“Hello?”
“Hello Alpha Thornefall, or should I say, Your Majesty,” the voice on the other end drawled.
It was thick and mocking, and it sounded rough and crude.
My spine straightened. “Who is this?”
