Alaric left after half an hour.

He couldn’t tell me much about the threat, but only because he didn’t know the details. Apparently he heard it through the grapevine that someone was trying to hurt Kai and I was the easiest way.

I had a headache forming just by thinking about it.

He wanted to inform Kai, but I stopped him. The last thing Kai needed was one more thing taking up his attention. Right now, he had a lot going on with the Northern pack. I didn’t need him worrying about me as well.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Scarlett asked sometime around four.

I’d been locked in the pack office all day, going through Kai’s files. I didn’t want it to compound so I helped with whatever I could. I had no idea that he dealt with so much every day from this pack and the others. It was easy to forget that he wasn’t just an Alpha, he was also the king.

“I’m fine,” I assured her with a smile. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“You’ve been acting weird since Eva left today. Did she say something to you?”

I shook my head. “I’m fine, I promise. Just tired.”

“Have you spoken to Kai?”

“I did this morning.”

“Maybe you should call him again later.”

I just hummed.

I wasn’t ready to talk to him yet. I still hadn’t come to terms with what Eva had said about them. I knew I’d have to confront him about it at some point, but until then, I wanted to keep my distance from the whole thing.

“I’m hungry.” Scarlett announced suddenly. “We should go out for dinner.”

“I don’t know,” I began. “I have a bit more work to-”

She snatched the file straight out of my hands. “You can handle that later. You need a break.”

With a resigned sigh, I stood to my feet. I knew that arguing with her would change nothing. Once she set her mind to it, there was nothing that could be done. I followed her out of the room and into the waiting car while watching her grin like a

maniac.

She drove to a restaurant not far from the offices. The walls were painted a deep red and the smell of fresh pasta wafted through the air. My stomach grumbled as I took a seat and a menu was handed over to me.

A waiter attended to us immediately and once our orders were placed, he disappeared into the back.

“So, when is Kai returning?” she asked. “I tried to ask him but his answers are vague.”

“Honestly, even I don’t know when. He says within two weeks but it may take longer than that.”

Her brows furrowed. “Why?”

“He needs someone to take over that pack and I know he doesn’t trust any of them there. Until he finds someone, he has to be there physically.”

She frowned. “That sucks.”

I shrugged. “I guess so. Besides, he’s probably looking into the issue with the hunters. Goddess knows how long it’ll all take.”

“Don’t you want him here?” she asked.

“Of course I do, but I can’t just ask him to abandon his work. If I do, he’ll come running, and it’ll only cause more problems in the long run. I just want it sorted out once and for all.”

She clearly wanted to say more, but the waiter returned at that exact moment with our meals.

We didn’t bring up Kai again for the rest of the dinner. We spoke about everything else, from the pack issues to Eva’s appearance this morning. It was a good distraction from the growing distance between my mate and I.

By the time we were done, I was stuffed and exhausted. I wanted to climb in bed and sleep until the next morning.

“Are you staying over again today?” I asked and she nodded.

“I think Kai would kill me if I wasn’t with you every second of the day. He worries about you.”

I sighed. “I know he does.”

“Actually, I don’t think you do. He asks for hourly updates. I don’t think he’s over Lucas’ attempt to kidnap you. He may not say it out loud, but he’s terrified of anything happening to you. Have you even noticed the guards?”

“What guards?”

She led me to the car and through the window, she pointed out a man. “He’s a guard.”
