My phone buzzed loudly, forcing me awake.

I blinked slowly, groaning as I felt a pounding in my head. I didn’t drink at all last night, but I felt like I was coming off at massive hangover.
I threw the blanket off me, dragging myself up into a sitting position. I remembered falling asleep on the couch, but seeing as I was in my bed, Scarlett must’ve carried me into the room.
I managed to drag myself over to the table where my phone sat. My limbs felt weirdly heavy and each step felt like torture. I finally made it and grabbed my phone. I didn’t even look at the caller ID before I picked up.
“Hello?”
There was silence for a second. “Princess, are you okay? You don’t sound good.”
I sank to the ground slowly. “You woke me up.”
“Shit, I’m sorry. It’s already seven, I thought you’d be awake.”
Seven? That couldn’t be right.
I reached for the curtain and pulled it back. I was shocked when I saw sunlight streaming in. I always woke up around six, and considering how early I slept yesterday, there was no reason for me to feel this way.
“I just got your text,” Kai continued.
It took me a moment to remember what text he was talking about, and once I did, my spine straightened immediately.
I hadn’t told him much over the phone. I’d only said that we needed to talk and it was about Eva. Yesterday, I had all the courage needed to have the conversation. Right now, I was beginning to doubt myself.
“What’s the worst that could happen?” my wolf asked. “Maybe he fucked her.”
“That means he lied about it.”
“It was years ago. He’s mated to us now. Everyone has a past. It’s normal.”
“Really? So why are you so pissed about it?”
For someone who was trying to remain level headed about it, I could feel her anger and annoyance with each word she spoke. She hated the possibility more than I did.
“Shut up,” she mumbled before slamming the wall between us back in place.
“Daisy” Kai’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. “You’re worrying me-”
“Did you sleep with Eva?”
He went silent for a full minute,
If not for the sound of his steady breathing, I would’ve assumed he hung up. The air stretched thin, and for each moment that he didn’t speak, I held my breath.
“That’s a… I wasn’t expecting that question,” he managed out. “Why are you asking?”
“Please just answer me,” I whispered, shutting my eyes tightly.

I wasn’t sure why I did it, but it felt like the safest thing to do.
“Don’t lie to me,
Kai.”
“I’d never.” He sounded offended by my statement. “We had sex, once. It was ages ago.”
“When you say ages, what does that mean?”
“Over twenty years. We were both drunk and I regretted it the next morning. I told her it should never have happened. We never spoke about it again.”
I let out a sigh of relief.
Twenty years was a long time. If it was recent, I wasn’t sure how I would’ve reacted.
“Why did you ask, Daisy?”
I told him everything that Eva had said. I didn’t leave out a single thing. By the time I was done, I could feel his rage swirling in my stomach despite our distance. I felt it pulsing down the mating bond like fire in my veins.
“What the fuck?” he managed out. “Why the hell would she say that?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know, maybe she wanted to mess with me.”
“I’ll talk to her.”
“Don’t,” I cut him off.
He groaned aloud. “Daisy, you can’t tell me not to do anything about this. You were upset.”
“And I’m over it. I don’t want to give it more time than it needs.”
I could tell he didn’t agree with me. “Just stay away from her until I figure out what the fuck she’s playing at.”
“I think you have enough on your plate without having to worry about her. I can handle one scorned ex.”
“She’s not an ex.”
“Yes, she is.” I dragged myself to my feet. “Whether you like it or-fuck.”
I wasn’t sure if I stood too fast but my head suddenly swam, my legs went shaky, and I would’ve fallen to the ground if I hadn’t grabbed onto the edge of the dresser for dear life.
My phone fell from my hands and I could hear Kai’s worried voice through the speakers. I focused on getting my breathing stable first and waited until the vertigo had eased before leaning forward and grabbing my phone.
“Daisy! Say something for fucks sake!”
“I’m fine,” I managed out. “I just… I’ve been feeling dizzy all morning.”
“How bad is it?”
“It’s fine.”
“Bullshit,” he hissed. “I’m calling a doctor to meet you at home.”
“Don’t you dare. I’m fine.”
“You don’t sound fine. I’m coming back.”

“Kai,” I groaned, but he stopped me.
