I thought my heart would beat right out of my fucking chest.

I’d been saying I love you to Daisy for weeks now: when she was sleeping, when she left the room, after hanging up the phone. I was waiting for the right time so as not to spook her, and I hadn’t intended to say it over the phone but hearing that she felt the same way filled me with a sense of relief so palpable that my knees shook.
“Say it again,” I urged.
She giggled like a fucking schoolgirl. “I love you, Kai Thornefall.”
I wished I could bottle up the sound and replay it every day. If I were to die right now, I’d die a happy fucking man knowing that I’d heard those three words from her.
Nothing else mattered, not the pack, not even the threat from the hunters,
A low rumble escaped my chest. “Fucking hell, princess. I hate that you’re not here right now.
She sighed softly. “Me too. How’s it going with finding someone to take over?”
Horrible.
There was no one in here that I could trust. The pack was an utter mess and Damien still hadn’t changed his mind about staying here. The chances of me sorting things out within two weeks were very low, but I couldn’t tell her that.
The last thing I wanted to do was ruin her day after those words.
“Good,” I lied. “I should be back soon.”
“Really?” she sounded surprised. “I
expecting bad news.”
I hated lying to her more than anything. The words tasted like acid on my tongue, but if it was to keep her safe, then I was willing to do it.
“How are things back there?” I asked, hoping to change the subject.
Thankfully, she didn’t think too much about it and delved into a long rant about all the work she had to do. I had a meeting in ten minutes, but I sat there, listening to every word she said. Her voice was like a lullaby, calming the chaos in my mind.
I wasn’t sure if I absorbed anything she said properly, but it didn’t matter as long as I could hear her.
“Are you even listening?”
she
I could practically see her pouting in my
mind.
“Of course I am,” I assured her. “I always listen to you.”
She huffed in disbelief. “I don’t-”
She yawned loudly, drowning away the rest of her sentence. I’d completely forgotten that she wasn’t feeling well.
“You should rest,” I told her. “I’ll ask Scarlett to bring you something.”
“You don’t have to,” she cut in quickly. “I can handle myself.”
“Daisy-” I began but she quickly interrupted me.

“Don’t worry about a thing. Everything will be alright, I promise.”
“Fine.”
I was going to call Scarlett whether she liked it or not, and I could bet everything I owned on the fact that she knew that too.
“Goodbye, baby, I love you.”
I could hear the grin in her voice as she repeated the words to me before hanging up.
I stared out the window for the next full minute, replaying her last three words over and over again until it was etched into my brain and my bones.
“You’re such a wimp,” my lycan teased.
“You forget that we are the same person.”
“It doesn’t matter. You’re still a wimp.”
“I am,” I agreed. “But only for her.”
Before he could say anything else, I felt pressure at the back of my mind from someone trying to access my mind link.
I lowered the wall and Damien’s voice filled my head.
“Everyone is waiting for you,” he told me. “The meeting should’ve started by now.
“Delay them for a few minutes. I’ll be right there.”
“You haven’t left, have you?” he asked and instead of denying, I hummed.
“I was talking to Daisy.”
“I can buy you ten minutes.”
That was more than enough.
I grabbed my things and prepared to leave when my phone buzzed in my hands. Assuming it was Daisy, I picked it up without checking the caller ID.
“Is everything okay, princess?”
“Eww, don’t ever call me that again.”
A picture of Scarlett fake gagging filled my mind and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“I thought you were my mate,” I explained.
“Check your phone next time. What if it was someone important? What if it was a meeting?”
“I don’t give a fuck,” I said simply. “How’s Daisy? Is she okay?”
“I haven’t seen her this morning.”
“She’s sick. Keep an eye on her for me.”
“It’s cute how worried you get when it comes to her.” I could hear the smile in her voice as she spoke. “But I didn’t call because of her.”
