Chapter 76
Scarlett was acting off all day.

I tried to ask her about it when she brought me breakfast, but she brushed me off and assured me that everything was fine. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
I felt so off balance that I couldn’t go into the office. I fell asleep in the afternoon and woke up to the files on the desk in the bedroom. I went through as many as I could until my head started to spin again and I gave up.
I hoped it was a twenty-four hour thing, but by the next morning, I still felt very off balance. I tried to hide it from Kai, but he was perceptive. He didn’t believe a lie that came out of my mouth. I guess it was a disadvantage of him being able to feel my heightened emotions. He could feel the exhaustion, even from so far away.
“Maybe we should go to a doctor,” Scarlett whispered as she sat at the edge of the couch stroking my hair out of my face. “This isn’t normal.”
“I’m fine,” I lied. “It’ll go away soon, I’m sure of it.”
I wasn’t sure if I was trying to convince her or myself.
A knock on the door forced her to her feet. I pulled the blanket tighter around my body for warmth, and burrowed as close to the couch as I could. All the curtains were drawn and the lights were off. I couldn’t even tell what time it was outside and that was exactly how I wanted it.
“No!” I heard Scarlett say firmly. “Get the fuck out.”
I couldn’t hear the person respond, but I heard Scarlett groan in frustration.
“You need to stop coming here.”
I dragged myself to my feet. I had a suspicion as to who she was talking to, and if I was right, I had to intervene before things got worse. I dragged my weak and shaky legs towards the front door, wincing at the bright light that hit my face as I got
closer.
Eva stood on the other side of the door. She wore a short floral dress and her lips were painted a bold red color. Scarlett blocked her from coming in with one arm.
“Daisy!” she exclaimed when she saw me and I winced from the noise. “Oh my goddess, you look terrible. Are you alright?”
She tried to take a step further but Scarlett stopped her. “I will toss you out on your fucking ass.”
“You’ve always had it out for me,” Eva hissed at her before turning to me. “Tell her to let me come in. I know some amazing home recipes that will make you feel better in no time. We can have another sleepover. I’ll be the best caregiver.”
The last thing I wanted was my mate’s ex-or whatever she was-around me right now. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to deal with her or her passive aggressive comments. I couldn’t guarantee that I wouldn’t try to kill her if she were to say something about her and Kai.
“As amazing as that sounds, I’ll have to decline,” I said with a fake grimace. “I think I just want to rest for now.”
She frowned. “At least let me give you a hug.”
“Maybe next time.” I gave her a tight smile. “I’ll see you around, Eva.”
It was clear she was not pleased.
She tried to speak, but I didn’t wait to hear what she was saying before turning on my heels and heading back into the house.

I heard Scarlett say something to her, but her voice was so low that I couldn’t make out the words. After that, the door slammed shut.
“The audacity,” Scarlett growled as she made her way into the house. “She’s acting like she owns the damn place.”
“It’s okay-”
“It’s not okay,” she snapped. “She needs to stop showing up here. Kai needs to do something about her fast.”
I felt the same, but there was nothing he could do save for kicking her out of the damn pack and I wasn’t going to ask for that.
I climbed onto the couch and closed my eyes. “I think I need a nap.”
“Hell, me too. How do you feel now?”
“Still a bit dizzy, but I’m sure I’ll be fine. I just need to rest.”
rang
I wasn’t sure how long I’d been sleeping when the sound of my phone buzzing woke me up. I ignored it at first, but it again. With a groan, I reached for it. I was surprise when I saw a private number flash across my screen. I checked the time and was shocked to see that it was already seven.
“Who is it?” Scarlett asked, her voice laced with the remnants of sleep.
I ignored her, wondering who was calling me so late at night. A part of me wanted to ignore it but I swiped right.
