Chapter 77

Scarlett rushed in front of me, taking a protective stance.

On a good day, I would’ve been more help, but I was frozen in place. After that phone call, all I could think of was that I was going to be hurt or taken and Kai would have no idea. I couldn’t bring my fingers to move in order to dial his number, and his wall was firmly in place so I couldn’t mind link him.

“Whoever you are, this is the only warning you’ll get,” Scarlett warned. “This is your last chance to leave or so help me. I will-”

“I never thought that I’d get threatened upon entering my own house.”

It took me a second to realize whose voice that was, and when I did, relief coursed through my bones. I let out a ragged breath, my heart finally beating properly. Scarlett’s stance faltered, her eyes widening in shock as Kai made his way into the living room.

He had a bag slung over his shoulder, his hair was messy and his eyes were alight with mischief and amusement. He looked around, immediately locking eyes with me and a small smile grew on his face.

“Hello, princess,” he drawled. “Did you miss me?”

I was off the couch and sprinting into his arms immediately. It didn’t matter that I was exhausted or that my head was pounding in my skull. His arms wrapped around me and I felt his lips press against my temple. Everything blurred, and for a split second, it was just us.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, clinging tightly to him. “You didn’t tell me you were coming.”

“I didn’t know I was coming until this morning. You were sick and I could feel how weak you were.”

“What about the pack?” I asked pulling back a little. “You said you needed to find someone to take over before you left.”

He opened his mouth to speak, but at the last minute, he decided against it and shook his head. “Don’t worry about it.”

A part of me was curious as to what he would’ve said, but I was too excited at his presence to even bother. He picked me up easily, wrapping my legs around his torso as he walked me back towards the couch.

It wasn’t until I saw Scarlett that I even remembered she was in the room. I opened my mouth to apologize but she waved me off.

“It’s alright, I get it,” she assured me.

She turned to Kai and gave him a curt nod.

“I’ll see you both later. I think I have somewhere else to be right now.”

I barely even heard the door click shut behind her.

I felt bad that she left just like that. She stayed with me while he was gone, but if I’d asked her to stay, she would’ve crinkled her nose and said something along the lines of ‘hell no’

I turned back to my mate, still in disbelief that he was here.

“Tell me this isn’t a dream,” I whispered and he laughed. “I could be hallucinating. I’m sick anyways.”

“It’s not, but just to make sure,” he trailed off, lowering his lips to mine.

When he kissed me, everything stopped: the discomfort, the headache, the ache that came from missing him. It blurred,

and it was just the two of us in the whole universe.

“Wait,” I pulled back. “What if I’m contagious? You could get sick just by kissing me.”

“I don’t care.” He tried to kiss me again, but I held up a hand to stop him.

“I’m serious, Kai. It’s bad enough that I don’t feel well, but you’re the Alpha and you have two packs to take-”

“Shut up,” he murmured before kissing me again.

He carried me into the bedroom easily and a few hours later, we were lying in bed facing each other while he traced small shapes over my skin. I smiled contently, nuzzling closer to him. The warmth from his skin made me feel warm and safe in a way I hadn’t felt all week.

“Selfishly, I’m glad to have you back so I don’t have to deal with as much paperwork,” I said softly. “I don’t know how you deal with it every day.”

“Trust me, it’s my least favorite part of my job, but they tell me you’ve been doing an amazing job.”

“Amazing might be a bit of a stretch.”

“Always so humble.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead. “You’d make a great Alpha.”

I snorted.

Considering I fell sick a few days into the job, it was clear I’d make a terrible Alpha, but I didn’t want to argue with him, I had more important things on my mind.

I loved having him here, but now that I had him, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to watch him leave again. It was bad enough when I knew I wouldn’t see him for two weeks, but now that I’d seen him and touched him, the very thought of him being away again filled me with a dread so cold that I shivered.

“How long are you staying?” I asked and he went still.

“You don’t have to worry about that.”

“Yes, I do.” I pulled back so he was looking me square in the eyes. “I need to know how long I have so I can prepare. Is it tomorrow?”

“No.”

“The day after?”

“Daisy-”

“Just tell me,”
