I thought Scarlett would’ve told Daisy about her plans. It wasn’t until when I arrived and Daisy asked about the pack that I knew she hadn’t.
Scarlett had caught my eyes and she shook her head, silently pleading with me not to say anything.
I hated lying to my mate more than anything, and Scarlett was one of if not Daisy’s favorite person in the entire pack. The knowledge that I’d be sending Scarlett away without as much as a proper goodbye didn’t sit right with me.
Daisy fell silent for a long minute.
For a moment, I thought she didn’t hear me, then she sat up abruptly and pulled herself to her feet.
She was much better than the mating bond led me to realize. I felt an immense wave of weakness from her last night and early this morning. She seemed to be getting better now considering the fact that she could stand and pace around the
room.
“Scarlett is leaving?” she asked and I reluctantly nodded. “Why?”
I shrugged. “You’d have to ask her.”
“You’re the one who approved it!” she exclaimed. “Why did you even ask her?”
“I didn’t. She called me and offered.”
Daisy stopped pacing immediately and turned to me with wide eyes. “You’re kidding, right?”
“I wish I was. I was just as surprised as you are. I was going to refuse, then you got sick, and I had to come back. She was the only available option.”
Daisy ran her fingers through her hair, murmuring curses under her breath.
I knew exactly where she was right now, I was there yesterday. I searched furiously for another alternative, anything that would keep Scarlett home, but there was none, at least, not right now. I’d need time to find someone else, and time was something we didn’t have.
“This doesn’t make any sense,” she mumbled. “Everything is falling apart. First the phone call, and now this-”
“Phone call?” I asked and she went deathly still. “What call, Daisy?”
She didn’t speak at first, she just fiddled her fingers in her lap.
I stood slowly, crossing the length of the room until I was standing directly in front of her. She hadn’t put her wall up yet, so
I could feel her guilt and the avoidance as she looked away from me. She was hiding something… something terrible.
“Daisy-”
“It’s nothing,” she began but I cut her off.
“Don’t lie to me. What fucking call are you talking about?”
She gave me a shaky smile and tried to wave me off. “It was probably just a prank call.”
It was very obvious that she didn’t believe that. Whatever that call was about, it terrified her, and I had a sinking feeling that I knew what it was about. They’d threatened to pay her a visit, but I didn’t think they were serious about it.
Even for the hunters, going after a lycan’s mate was bold.

Inside of me, my lycan growled. Rage coursed through me, but I fought hard to keep it at bay. The last thing I needed right now was to lose control, especially not when things were so fragile. I couldn’t promise that I wouldn’t do something stupid like blindly attacking one of their suspected bases.
“Sit down,” I ground out.
She opened her mouth to refuse, but something in my expression must have caught her off guard because she huffed and lowered herself onto the edge of the bed.
“Speak, now.”
With a sigh, she began. “I got a call just before you came in.”
By the time she was done, I was practically vibrating with barely concealed rage. It was bad enough that they came to me, but to go to her?
The hunters had always been a problem, but never one I considered personal. Unfortunately, they’d just made it personal.
I pressed a kiss to her forehead. “If he calls back, let me know.”
“Kai, where are you going?” she asked but I didn’t respond. “Stop, don’t do anything stupid, please.”
“I won’t,” I assured her. “I just need to make a few calls.”
It was clear she didn’t believe me, and unfortunately, I didn’t have it in me to convince her right now. I just gave her a smile, and one last lingering kiss on her forehead before walking out of the room.
I headed for the office, a bit relieved to be back in this familiar space, although I wished it was under better circumstances.
Once I was sure I was alone, I called Damien. He picked up on the third ring.
“I know for a fact that you got home over an hour ago” he drawled. “You couldn’t even let her rest for one day-”
I ignored his jab and went straight to business. “The hunters called her.”
He fell silent for a full minute. “The fuck? What did they want?”
“The Northern pack.”
He cursed under his breath. “Maybe we should just give it to them and avoid the whole drama.”
“I would’ve, if they hadn’t tried to threaten her. I want you to find out everything you can about them.”
“We don’t know shit about them though, that’s why they’ve been allowed to roam for this long.”
“True, but there has to be a reason they want the Northern pack. Perhaps Lucas was stupid enough to keep evidence that could be traced back to them. Have your best spies comb through, and for the love of everything holy, make sure no one
finds out.”
