Chapter 79

Kai didn’t return until long after I’d fallen asleep for the night.

I took his dinner to him before retiring to the room but he barely even glanced at it. He was on a call, barking out orders to whoever was on the other end. I debated asking him to stay with me, but I figured it was best to let him deal with whatever it

was.

He was yet to explain why he was so spooked by the call or who the person was, but I had a sinking feeling of who it was already.

By the net morning, I felt surprisingly better. My head wasn’t pounding as hard and I didn’t feel sick. I was able to get out of bed at the normal time and even spent a few minutes on the treadmill. I felt more relaxed than I had in a very long time.

Good morning, princess,” Kai drawled.

I stopped in my tracks, glancing over at him in the kitchen. He’d set out two plates for breakfast and gestured for me to come and sit next to him.

I hesitated for a moment before joining him. He wore only a pair of plain shorts and once I was within reach, he pressed a kiss to my temple.

“I thought you’d have gone to work by now,” I murmured, taking a bite out of my bacon.

“I’m leaving in half an hour. I wanted to make sure you were good this morning.”

I just hummed and kept eating. I didn’t know what else to say.

He tidied up the kitchen, washing plates and clearing up the area he’d cooked in all the while I sat behind him in silence.

The air was thick with unanswered questions and the tension of what lay ahead, but neither of us was ready to address it right now. Thankfully, the sound of the doorbell filled the air. I was out of my seat in seconds, rushing over to pull it open.

Scarlett stood on the other side of the door, her hands shoved in her pockets as she swayed awkwardly on the balls of her feet.

“Can I come in?” she asked and I immediately stepped aside.

“Since when do you ask?”

She just shrugged, rubbing her sweaty palms on her jeans. “Is Kai in?”

A part of me wanted to demand an explanation for her sudden desire to leave the pack. She’d never expressed to me that she didn’t like it here. Then again, perhaps I didn’t know her as well as I thought I did.

She was my only friend here, and she was leaving. It was a hard fucking pill to swallow.

“But it’s not about you,” my wolf said softly. “It’s selfish to think she made this decision because of you.”

“I know she didn’t. I just wish she’d have considered me before making it.”

“Do you consider her before making every decision?”

I didn’t have a response to that, so I ended the conversation and turned back to Scarlett who was still waiting on an answer for me.

“Yeah, he’s in the kitchen. Come on, there’s pancakes on the table.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but I didn’t give her the chance. I tugged her alongside me and she reluctantly followed. Kai met us at the door, he was already on his way out. He looked between Scarlett and I warily.

“Is everything okay?” he asked and she nodded.

“I just,” she trailed off, glancing over at me. “I think we have a few things we need to discuss.”

Kai sighed, running his hands through his hair. “She knows.”

There was surprise, then frustration, before resignation finally kicked in on Scarlett’s face. She couldn’t look at me, she just twiddled with her thumbs and kept her gaze on the wall next to me. I could practically feel the shame and embarrassment radiating off her.

“Oh,” she said finally. “In that case, I just wanted to ask when I’d be leaving. You’re here now, and it seems like you’re staying.”

You don’t have to leave today if that’s what you’re worried about. Damien is still there. You can join him whenever you’re-”

He didn’t get to finish his sentence because his phone started to ring.

A few seconds later, mine and Scarlett’s began to ring as well. I ran into the kitchen and grabbed my phone from where I’d left it on the counter. Kai’s secretary was the one calling. I’d given her my number after working in the office one day.

She was a smart girl, very funny too, and she never called unless something was wrong.

I picked up immediately. “Is everything okay?”

“Unfortunately not. Where are you?”

“At home, why?”

“I think you need to head to the border. You should probably take the Alpha with you.”

“Why?”

She hesitated for a moment. “I think it’s best if you see it for yourself.”

I cursed aloud, hanging up the phone before heading back over to Scarlett and Kai. Judging from the expressions on their faces, it was clear they’d gotten the same bit of information that I did.

We quickly changed into something more decent and headed out immediately. Scarlett sat in the back seat of the car, silently staring out the window as we drove. The border was over half an hour away from the house so the drive was less than decent.

Tension threatened to choke us until Scarlett decided she’d had enough and turned to me.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that I was leaving,” she said softly. “I didn’t want to talk about it until I was sure.”

“When did you become sure?” I asked and she hesitated for a moment.

“Yesterday, just before Kai came back.”
