It was hard at first to get the rest of the pack to comply with the curfew, but slowly and surely, they did.

Over the next three days, people adjusted to the new way of life. Shops closed down around six, and people were locked in their homes before eight. We hadn’t heard a single thing from the hunter, and no one had gone missing or gotten hurt.

It would’ve been so easy to convince myself that everything that happened was a figment of my imagination and we weren’t in any danger if I wasn’t thinking about the beheaded wolf every night. Every single time I lay my head to sleep, I’d see his lifeless eyes and fear would crawl up my throat.

“Daisy!”

My head snapped up sharply at Scarlett’s voice. She stood in front of me, hands crossed over her chest as guards loaded her bags into the back of the car.

She was officially leaving today.

We tried to delay it for as long as possible. I’d even tried to convince Kai to let her be here for the mating ceremony tomorrow, but he couldn’t. Damien had to be here as the Beta, and they couldn’t afford to leave the Northern pack unprotected.

“I’m sorry, did you say something?” I asked.

She shook her head, a small smile tugging at her lips. “You’re very distracted today.”

“Yeah, there’s a lot happening right now. I hate that you’re leaving.”

“Trust me, I hate it too. Damien is never going to let me hear the end of the fact that I’m missing your ceremony tomorrow. Make sure you send me pictures before he gets the chance.”

“I’ll try my best,” I managed out. “You and Damien though… are you good now?”

She shrugged. “We’re civil. I’ve accepted that nothing is ever going to happen between us again and I’ve chosen to forget what did happen.”

I wasn’t sure if she was trying to convince me or herself, but I wasn’t buying it. When she first told me about him, she was obsessed with him, and with the entire idea of being with him. It wasn’t possible that she’d just forgotten about all of that at once. It wasn’t a switch that could be flipped.

I wanted to combat her on that but she quickly cut in.

“I don’t want to talk about Damien right now.” She stepped forward, taking my hand in hers. “If anything happens, make sure you call me, okay?”

“You don’t have to worry about me, I have Kai here to protect me.”

“I know that, but I would really like to know. You’re my friend, Daisy. Before you’re my cousin’s mate or my Luna, I see you as a friend. If you ever need to talk, or if Kai is just being an asshole, please let me know.”

I sighed, the corner of my lips tugging upwards. “I will.”

She stared at me for a moment, as if trying to figure out if I was telling the truth or not. Once she was satisfied with whatever she saw in my eyes, she pulled me into a firm hug, wrapping her arms around my shoulders.

I inhaled her scent, unsure of when next I’d get the chance to do that. She was all warm edges and lavender, and she smelled like home. I hadn’t realized the extent to which I’d miss her until I held her close and tears began to gather around my eyes.

“Don’t y you

dare cry,” she hissed out. “If you do, I’m going to cry too, and I don’t want that right now.”

“I can’t help it okay? I’m an emotional woman.”

She laughed loud, the sound echoing right into my bones as she squeezed me tighter.

“I’ll try to come back as often as I can. It may not be a lot in the beginning, but once things are stable, I’ll be taking trips

other week. My only request is that you don’t have kids without me.”

I pulled back, a quizzical look on my face.

“Don’t look at me like that, with the way you and Kai go at it like rabbits, it won’t be a surprise if you have a kid soon.”

My cheeks burned a bright shade of red as heat crawled up my neck. “We’re not having kids right now.”

She waved me off. “IF you say so.”

There was so much more I wanted to say that I couldn’t because Kai walked out of the pack house at that very moment. He took the spot next to me, his hand resting on my hip. He stared at his cousin, a silent conversation going on between them.

She broke the stare first and wrapped her arms around his torso. He sighed, holding her close.

“There’s still time for you to stay,” he said but she snorted.

“Not a chance. I want this.”

He must’ve had enough time to come to terms with it because he didn’t fight or protest, he just squeezed her tightly before letting go.

She wiped at her eyes before turning on her heels and disappearing into the car. I chewed on the inside of my cheek hard to prevent myself from crying. It was the one thing she’d asked of me and I was going to do everything to give that to her.

I waited until the car had driven far enough before the first tear fell, and even then, I wiped it away quickly.

“I’m sorry,” Kai whispered, lips ghosting over my temple. “I know how much you wanted her here.”

“It’s fine,” I sniffled. “It’s for the greater good.”

“That doesn’t mean you have to like it though.”

He was right, but there was nothing I could do about it anymore so I just shrugged.

“Come with me, I want to show you something.”

He didn’t wait for me to respond before tugging me by the arm and leading me into the office. I tried to protest, trying to figure out where the hell he was taking me, but he didn’t respond.
