Chapter 88

龍興

Kai and I spent the entirety of the day together, having breakfast and just lying in bed. Around five, we had to part ways to prepare for the ceremony, and I knew I wouldn’t be seeing him again.

It was a taboo for the Alpha to see his Luna on the day of the ceremony; something they’d picked up from humans over the

years.

It wasn’t until I was all alone in the house that I realized just how much I missed Scarlett. She would’ve been here with me, telling me stupid jokes and making me laugh while I got ready for the mating ceremony in a few hours.

Because of the curfew, it was going to be a quiet and intimate event. Only the elders and Damien were going to attend. It wasn’t an ideal situation, and I could tell Kai was already stressed about the other packs.

It was customary to have at least the Alphas of the other packs at the king’s mating ceremony, but we couldn’t do that right

now.

My phone buzzed and immediately I saw the caller ID, I rushed to answer.

“I was just thinking about you,” I said as Scarlett’s face came into view.

“Why the hell aren’t you already in the bathroom?” she asked, taking me in. “You should be taking a proper rose bath right now.”

“I was just going to take a shower.”

She stared at me like I’d just told her I had a horn. “No fucking way. There are rose petals in your bathroom, I bought some before I left. For the love of everything holy, take a fucking soak in that tub right now.”

I knew better than to argue with her right now, so I did as she asked, running a bath and scattering rose petals into the tub. I lowered myself into the tub, setting my phone up at the edge so she could see me.

“How are things over there?” I asked and she let out an exaggerated breath.

“Honestly? It’s stressful as fuck. Everyone here already hates me, and the council has the most frustrating group of people that I have ever met.”

“At least they’re not rioting,” I offered and she snorted.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they riot in the coming days. It’s so difficult to live with them and keep them in check. I don’t know how you did it. How do I make them trust me?”

“I don’t know if I’m the right person to ask. They don’t like me much.”

She ran her hands through her hair with a sigh and I wished I could do more to help, but her relationship with the pack was something she’d have to work on by herself. I couldn’t make them like her any more than I could make them like me.

“I’m sorry,” I said softly, but she waved me off.

“It’s fine, I asked for this anyway. You’ve soaked long enough, get out before you get pruned.”

She spent the next few hours directing me on everything from which creams to use to how to get dressed. My dress arrived sometime last night and I slipped it on easily, marveling in the way the fabric swirled over my body.

It was a long A-line white dress. It was sleeveless with a sweetheart neckline and little swirls on the skirt that resembled gusts of wind. It was simple, but gorgeous; perfect for a mating ceremony.

My makeup was more on the simple side, mostly because I’d have to shift at the end of the ceremony.

“What do you think?” I asked, twirling for her.

“I think you look fucking gorgeous,” she said, not even hesitating. “If I were a man, I’d totally mate with you.”

A bark of laughter escaped me before I could stop it.

She opened her mouth to say more, but I heard knocking from the door of my room. I went deathly still because I was supposed to be home alone.

“Who is that?” I called out, reaching for the lamp to defend myself if need be.

The door creaked open slowly, and when I saw who was on the other side, I couldn’t help but smile.

“You clean up very nicely, Daisy,” Damien drawled, adjusting the collar of his shirt. “Kai is going to lose his mind.”

“It’s nice to see you too, Damien.” I pulled him in for a hug. “Did you just arrive?”

“I came in about an hour ago.” He glanced over my shoulder at Scarlett on the screen. “Unfortunately, we have to go.”

“Don’t forget the pictures, Daisy, I love you!” She blew me a kiss before ending the call.

I turned my attention back to Damien. “How is she handling things there?”

“It’s too early to say.” He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. “You should have never agreed to send her there. They’ll fucking eat her alive.”

“I didn’t agree. I was blindsided by it as well. If you have a problem with it, take it up with Kai.”

He huffed. “I will, after your ceremony. Come on.”

I was a bundle of anxious eagerness as we drove to the clearing for the meting ceremony. Lights illuminated the otherwise dark night, and the full moon shone up ahead. It felt so surreal that something I’d waited on for so long was finally here. I couldn’t wait to be mated to him and yet, a part of me was worried that something would go wrong.

“We have security around the whole place,” Damien said.

I turned sharply. “Did I say that out loud?”

“No, but your expression wasn’t hard to read. Kai would never do anything to put you in danger.”

“I know that, but-”

“No buts,” he cut me off. “This is your day, and nothing is going to ruin it for you. You’re going to walk in there and be mated to the love of your life while the rest of us watch and pretend we’re not jealous, okay?”

I laughed lightly. “Okay”
