Growing up as the son of the king. I’d never lacked anything. I never knew what it was to want because I had everything I could ever want at my fingertips. It wasn’t until I met Daisy that I knew what it meant to want something so badly that I thought I’d die without it.
I’d looked forward to this day since the moment I laid eyes on her. I pictured it during my waking moments and dreamt about it every night that I slept. If it were up to me, we would have been mated right there in the middle of the woods when she was escaping her pack.
I didn’t even know her name at the time, but I knew without the shadow of a doubt that I wanted her for the rest of my life. It was a miracle that she’d accepted me too after everything she’d been taught, and everything she went through.
“You look nervous,” Alaric said, his lips curving into a smile. “It’s a new look for you.”
I’d chosen him to officiate the mating ceremony. Out of all the council members, he was the closest to me. He acted more like a father than mine ever did, and there was no one more deserving of the honor.
“I am nervous,” I agreed. “It’s not every day that the most amazing woman in the world agrees to be my mate.”
He smiled fully this time, clasping my shoulder in a warm grip. “It’s an honor to be able to see this part of your life. You are no longer the young boy I knew all those years ago who was struggling to find his place in the world.”
“I grew up, Alaric.”
“That, you did.”
Before he could say more, I heard footsteps approaching in the distance. My spine straightened and I instead turned to face the entrance where Daisy would be coming through.
She’d done an amazing job with the venue. Flowers littered the walkway, and she’d positioned the end of the aisle right in the middle of the clearing. The moon shone down directly over us.
I adjusted my shirt, making sure I looked presentable as she came into view. Her hair was curled to perfection but pinned back away from her face and her dress did wonders for her figure. It was like a halo swirling around her. My mouth fell open in a mix of shock and disbelief. I couldn’t believe that something so perfect was mine.
Damien walked with her, leading her over to me. As soon as she was within reach, I took her hand in mine. I wanted to pull her to me and slam my lips to hers. I wanted to feel her skin pressed against mine.
“Whatever you’re thinking, stop,” she hissed down the mind link. “You forget that I have a front row seat to your thoughts.”
I laughed. “I’m not going to hide how much I want you, princess.”
“Maybe you can show it when we aren’t surrounded by all the council members and your Beta.”
Her cheeks were flushed and the tips of her ears were a bright shade of red. She blushed easily, and there was almost nothing I wouldn’t do to see that bright hue on her skin. Thankfully for her, the ceremony began and I had to briefly turn my attention away from her.
The ceremony wasn’t complicated. It included our hands being fied with a red thread while Alaric repeated some words in Latin. My mother told me what it meant once, but I couldn’t remember. I know it had something to do with strengthening the bond and two souls becoming one.
Once that part was over, we were given a silver knife and a small incision was made in the center of our palms. The blood dripped onto the dirt and mixed before sizzling and disappearing. The next part was the trickiest because we had to fuse our palms together.

Because the blade was silver, the wounds wouldn’t heal immediately and lycan blood was poisonous to wolves. It wouldn’t kill her, but it did have the potential to make her sick for a while.
“Are you ready for this?” I asked and she nodded.
“I’ll be fine, Kai. You’re not going to hurt me.”
I wasn’t at all sold on the idea, but it was an integral part of the ceremony.
I clasped her hand in mine and electricity rushed up my body. Daisy fucking shivered from the touch.
The final part involved the chalice. Till date, I had no idea what the strange liquid inside was. It was a secret that the council guarded closely. I tried to ask once, but Alaric told me that they were under oath to never reveal it.
I lifted the chalice to my lips and drank.
It tasted like fruits, but there was a metallic after taste to it. I swallowed it, doing my best to ignore how it settled like slime at the back of my throat.
“Now, it’s her turn,” Alaric said.
Instead of handing the chalice to her, I held some of the liquid in my mouth, grabbed Daisy’s face with my free hand and kissed her. She gasped in shock as I poured the liquid down her throat. By the time I pulled back, her cheeks were the color of a tomato and she couldn’t even look at me.
Alaric just shook his head, trying and failing to hide his smile.
“Since you already took the liberty to mark her before today, the ceremony is officially complete,” Alaric announced. “May the goddess bless your union. Now, you may shift into your creatures to finalize it all.”
“Are you ready?” I asked Daisy and she hummed.
“As ready as I’ll ever be.”
My lycan was already brimming at the surface, waiting to be let out. I relented a bit of control and felt the familiar sting of bones cracking as he emerged. With that came another feeling, one deeper, more personal, right in the center of my chest as the mating bond formed between us.
What I felt of the mating bond before was nothing compared to what it felt like now. I could feel her; every thought, every emotion. If we were shouting at each other over a distance before, right now, she was standing right next to me.
Unlike wolves, lycans didn’t shift onto all fours. We were as hairy as wolves, but much bigger and we stood on our hind legs. My vision sharpened, and claws grew out from where my fingers were as black veins overtook my skin. Around us, the others shifted too, but my attention wasn’t on them, it was on the wolf next to me.
I’d never seen Daisy in her wolf form before today, and I was left absolutely blown away by the creature in front of me. Her fur was a soft blond color, somewhere between the color of her hair and the color white. Her eyes were a bright shade of amber. She was larger than the average wolf as well.
She lifted those sharp eyes to me, ever curious and I watched as she approached me without hesitation. Her snout bumped mine ever so slightly, almost explorative.
