I couldn’t remember the last time I felt the wind in my fur and the ground underneath my paws. I hadn’t realized just how much I’d suppressed my wolf until now, and when Kai asked for us to take a run, I couldn’t help but dash into the woods without asking why.
He followed close behind, and despite running at my fastest, I could tell that he was barely exerting any energy at all, none of the others were. There was an ease to their strides as they surrounded us, almost as if they were jogging.
Their lycan form was beautiful. Dark veins crawled up their arms and faces giving a terrifying look, but I didn’t feel scared. Perhaps it was because I’d spent so long with them that I knew they would never dream of hurting me. Their teeth were sharp, their claws almost twice the length of mine. One of them could easily disembowel me without breaking a sweat.
“Do we have a time limit for how long we have to run?” I asked Kai.
“Why do you ask? Are you tired?”
“Tired? Not a chance. I haven’t run like this in months. I could go for hours.”
He chuckled. “Run to your heart’s content princess, we’re here.”
There was something off about his voice, but I pushed the thought away. If something were wrong, he’d tell me. He wouldn’t put the lives of the council members and Damien in danger for a run.
I pushed my legs further, weaving through the trees and breathing in the forest scent. I could hear the birds taking flight as we approached and the crickets that chirped from a distance away. I could smell the moss and the sap from the trees. I hadn’t felt so in touch with nature in a while.
I smelled a stream up ahead and I followed the scent until I came to a small body of water. It was barely larger than a pond and the moonlight shone directly on the surface giving it more of a silvery glow.”
I paused to catch my breath and take a drink. As a human, I would never dare drink from the pond unless it was a life and death situation, but my wolf had the capacity to digest things that I could only dream of.
The others stopped around us, drinking from the stream as well. However, my attention was on Damien. He remained on high alert, his ears pointed upwards as if he were listening out for something. He kept walking around the trees, his eyes never leaving the path we emerged from.
A few of the guards who were at the mating ceremony were doing the same. If I had any doubts before, they disappeared in that moment.
Kai stepped up beside me, nuzzling my fur softly.
“What’s going on?” I asked. “And don’t lie to me. I can tell that something is wrong.”
“Don’t worry about it, princess.”
“You can’t tell me not to worry. Everyone is on edge. Did something happen?”
He sighed deeply. “No, but the air feels wrong.”
I’d never heard that statement before in my life. “I don’t understand.”
“I can’t explain it either. We can feel that something is off in the air, but so far, there aren’t any indications that anything is happening. It’s probably nothing.”
I wasn’t sure if he was trying to convince me or himself, but I let it slide for now.

Chapter 90
“We should probably head home,” I said softly.
It was the last thing I wanted to do, but if they felt like something was wrong, I wasn’t going to keep them out for a second longer.
We began the trek towards the house. Once again, everyone formed a protective circle around me with Kai standing so close that I knew that he hadn’t told me the full truth about whatever was bothering him.
We arrived at home after about half an hour and my wolf whined, almost pleading for me not to shift back.
“You can shift whenever you want, Daisy,” Kai said into my mind. “You don’t need a special event. If you need to stretch your wolf, then do it.”
“I didn’t say-”
You didn’t have to. We’re mated now, I can hear you think when your wall is down.”
“Fuck.” I quickly slammed my wall down. “This isn’t fair, I always forget my wall up.”
“Good,” he nudged me forward. “It means I don’t have to worry about what you think. You can shift and go in through the back. I need to talk to Damien first.”
I did as he asked, stepping in through the back so no one would see me naked. Once I was safely in the house, I quickly ran up the stairs to throw on some clothes and bring some down for Kai.
I couldn’t help but smile to myself as I rummaged through the closet. The mating ceremony had felt so far, and now, it was over. I was officially Kai’s Luna.
“You’re also the Queen of the wolves,” my wolf said.
I went deathly still at that reminder.
It was easy to forget that Kai was King and that being his mate came with its own royal obligations. We’d need to send letters to the other packs to inform them of my new position. I would have to be involved in diplomatic meetings, I’d meet with other Alphas.
The thought sent shivers down my spine. Fortunately for me, I didn’t have to think about it today. All I had to think about was my mate who was just outside the house.
I stepped into the living room just as Kai walked in. He was stark naked but he didn’t shy away or try to hide himself. I’d seen him nude countless times but I couldn’t help the light flush that climbed up my cheeks.
“Nervous, are we?” he mused, stepping closer to me.
He grabbed the clothes from my hand and to my shock, he tossed them to the side and pulled me into him.
His lips descended on mine, his fingers tangling through my hair. A gasp left me and his tongue slid into my mouth as he deepened the kiss,
“I’ve wanted to do that since the moment I saw you in that dress,” he whispered. “It’s a shame it was ruined so you could shift. I would have loved to peel it off you.”
I groaned aloud, my skin flushing with arousal.
My hands found their way around his neck as he easily picked me up with one hand. He walked us over to the couch before climbing on top of me and breaking the kiss to pepper my neck.
My hips rocked of their own accord as his teeth grazed over my mark.
