Chapter 92
There was pure chaos and pandemonium as I arrived at the council home.

Dead bodies littered the courtyard, and Damien was nowhere to be found. People were yelling and running around holding blood stained weapons. The smell of blood was so pungent in the air that even I had to pause to catch my breath.
“Kai!”
I turned to find Alaric limping over to me. There was a wound on his temple that was already healing quickly and blood stained his robes.
“What the fuck happened here?” I asked. “Where is Damien?”
*He chased after one of the hunters that got away,” he explained. “They came at us from everywhere. They weren’t many, but they were armed with silver. If we were wolves, we’d be dead by now. I think they were as surprised as us that they couldn’t kill us.”
“Fuck,” I cursed aloud, running my fingers through my hair.
A young boy stepped up to us, holding a first aid box. He tried to tug Alaric away so he could check on his wounds, but Alaric brushed him off sharply.
“You should get yourself check out,” I said softly, but he waved me off.
“I’ve lived for centuries, Kai. It will take more than a silver bullet to kill me. There are more people in dire need of help.”
“Was anyone seriously hurt?” I asked.
There were a few wolves who worked in the council home. Most of them were rogues that we found at the border, or people who left their packs and came here for whatever reason.
Alaric didn’t respond immediately, instead, he bowed his head to the ground. “There was a boy.”
“He was in the gardens when the attack started. He was hit by a stray. He’s on his way to the hospital now.”
“I need everything you have on him. I want to see him personally.”
“Of course.”
It looked like he wanted to say more, but before he could speak, I heard yelling coming from the far right.
Damien emerged from the woods, dragging the limp body of a young man. Blood coated his entire right arm and the side of his head. His shirt was completely soaked, and his pants were ripped in a few places,
“I found the fucker,” he hissed, tossing the body into the middle of the courtyard. “The bastard fucking shot me at close range.”
“Is he dead?” I asked and he growled.
“I wish he was. I wanted to snap his fucking neck, but it’ll be more fun to torture him instead.”
The smile on his face was purely animalistic and for a brief moment, I felt a twinge of pity for the ordeal that hunter would go through. The pity disappeared as soon as I saw another council member with blood staining their robes.
“Take him to the dungeons,” I told Damien. “Then go to a fucking hospital and get yourself checked out.”
“Why bother?” he asked. “Women will dig the battle wounded look.”

Resisting the urge to pinch the bridge of my nose in frustration, I sighed. “It’s an order, Damien. Prolonged silver in your system can badly hurt you. Make sure there aren’t any bullets left in you.”
“Fine,” he grumbled. “Where’s Daisy?”
“Home.”
I was so grateful I didn’t bring her with me. She liked to act tough, but I knew that sights like these bothered her. I’d been a warrior for a long time, and even I sometimes got unsettled by the things I saw.
I turned back to Alaric who was still standing next to me. “Tell me if anyone needs anything. I have to get back to my mate.”
“Of course,” he bowed. “We should have never made you leave her in the first place. This is your first night as a mated couple.”
If this first night was any indication, we were in for a long and bumpy ride.
As soon as I unlocked the door of my house, I knew something was wrong.
There was a familiar scent in the air. I’d smelled it while we were on the run after the mating ceremony, but I paid no heed to it. It was merely a gust of wind then, and I chalked it up to the forest, but here… I knew that something was wrong.
“Daisy!” I called out. “Where are you?”
“I’m in the bathroom, I’ll be out soon.”
Her voice shook a little, almost as if she were trying to hold herself together. I followed her scent into the guest bathroom and found her bent over the sink. She was rubbing something on her temple.
“Kai, I told you I’ll be out in a second,” she mumbled, all the while keeping her head low.
If I had any doubts before that something was wrong, they were gone now.
“Daisy, look at me.”
She didn’t move. “Just give me a-”
I grabbed her arm and pulled her to face me.
She kept her eyes fixed on the ground, but I didn’t need her to look at me. The red burn on her temple and the dark bruises around her neck told me everything I needed to know.
“What happened to you?” I asked slowly, trying to keep the rage from boiling out of me. “Who hurt you?”
“I can explain-”
“Well you better fucking start because there’s a burn on your head.”
“It’s from silver.”
That much was obvious. Only silver left those kinds of burns on wolves.
“How did you get silver to your head?”
She swallowed deeply. “It was the hunter. He was here.”
All I could hear was the sound of blood rushing through my ears.
I had never wanted to kill a person as much as I wanted to kill that hunter. It was one thing to threaten my pack, and it was

another to come into my home and hurt my mate. I could only imagine how terrified she was being alone with that bastard, and it was my fault.
She asked to come with me. I should have taken her with me.
“Kai,” her voice was soft as she stepped closer. “It’s not your fault.”
“It’s my job to protect you,” I hissed. “It was most definitely my fault.”
