Kai made sure I had a drink of water and looked through the entire house to make sure that no one was lurking in the shadows. I told him we were alone, but he wasn’t satisfied until he’d gone through every nook and cranny of the house.

I couldn’t sleep.

Long after knowing that we were safe and that the hunter was in the wind, my eyes just wouldn’t close of their own accord. I couldn’t help but think back to the moment the hunter had my life in his hands and his gun pressed against my forehead.

For a split second, I thought he would actually blow my brains out. I’d never seen such rage before. He was barely containing it. It felt like staring into the eyes of pure death and for a moment, I’d made my peace with the fact that I would die.

Surprisingly, he pulled back, seemingly disgusted with himself. I was stunned by the swift change in tactics; I could barely even breathe.

He took a few steps back, breathing heavily, and when he spoke, he didn’t look up at me.

“I am nothing like you people,” he’d whispered, his voice so soft that if the room wasn’t quiet, I wouldn’t have heard him. “Deliver

my message to your mate. The next time you see me, I won’t be so keen on sparing your life.”

He walked out of the house without another word.

I didn’t move until I heard the door slam shut behind him. I immediately ran to the bathroom and threw up everything in my stomach. That was where Kai had found me.

“Penny for your thoughts, princess?” Kai asked, brushing my hair off my shoulders. “You should be asleep.”

I lay wrapped in his arms, my back to his chest. We were both pretending to be sleeping, but it seemed he was tired of that game.

I turned in his arms, locking eyes with him. “I can’t sleep.”

“I know, I can practically see the wheels turning in your head,” he sighed softly. “You worry too much.”

“Says the man currently awake in bed with me. You forget, Kai, that I also have access to your emotions.”

He wasn’t even trying to hide his worry. His wall was up and with that came all his emotions and concerns. We were thinking the same thing, but neither of us wanted to voice it out. It meant admitting that we were grossly unprepared for what lay ahead.

The hunter wasn’t like Lucas, he was smart and sophisticated, he was experienced too, and older. He had a loyal army at his back, and he was strong… much stronger than we imagined.

“Was anyone hurt in the attack?” I asked and Kai nodded.

“A serving boy at the council home. He is in the hospital fighting for his life. I should be there.”

“Why? Because you’re his Alpha?”

“No, Daisy, because I’m the reason he is there in the first place.”

Kai sat up and turned away from me. He stared out the open window, his eyes fixed on the full moon high in the sky. I hesitated for a moment before rising too and settling behind him, my hand gently resting on his bare back.

“It wasn’t your fault.”

“I made a decision, Daisy. I chose not to hand over the Northern pack. Everything that happens after is a result of that

decision.”

“If you handed over the pack, thousands would have died.”

“Thousands may die still. I chose to be a king, not an Alpha, and my pack is suffering because of it.”

That was far too much a burden for one man to carry. There was no right choice in this situation. He was damned from the beginning.

“So what happens now?” I asked finally. “He got into the pack so easily; into the house too.”

“Honestly princess, for the first time in my life… I don’t know.”

I didn’t sleep all night.

By morning, my eyes were heavy and exhaustion weighed heavy in my bones, but as soon as the sun was up in the sky, Kai and I headed out. We stopped to get flowers, and the store attendant stared at us for a full minute, her mouth agape.

She stumbled over her words and tripped over her own feet a couple of times. It was the funniest and cutest thing I’d ever

seen.

“A lot of mated couples don’t leave the house right after,” Kai explained as we left the store. “That’s why she was surprised to

see us.”

“Really?” He hummed. “She should have known we would be out after the attack yesterday.”

“No one knows about the attack, Daisy. The last thing I want is to give my pack reason to worry. We kept it tightly under wraps.”

“How? Surely someone would have spilled the news.”

He smiled softly. “The men at the council home are sworn to the council. They cannot directly disobey an order that comes from them. If they do, they will die where they stand. Alaric ordered everyone to keep the information to themselves.”

“News like that can only stay hidden for so long.”

“I know, that’s why we need to put an end to this fast.”

The hospital smelled like antiseptic and death. It sent shivers up my spine… and not the good kind.

The nurses were kind though, they bowed and smiled, quickly weaving through the halls and leading us towards a private room at the far end of the ward.

To my surprise, I opened the door to find Alaric already seated in a chair by the bed. His head was in his hands but he immediately snapped up when he heard us approach.

“I wasn’t expecting you both.” He stood to his feet and bowed low. “Alpha, Luna.”

“How is he?” I asked, glancing over at the boy in the bed.

He looked young, and there were so many wires poking into him. His skin was a bit pale, and his eyes were sunken, but the subtle rise and fall of his chest reminded me that he was alive… he was still breathing.

“Stable. They managed to get the silver out of him, but no one knows when or if he will wake up.”

A knot formed in my throat at Alaric’s words. The boy was too young to have his life cut short over a battle that was not his.

“These are for him,” I managed out, handing over the flowers. “Does he have a family? Someone that misses him?”

Alaric shook his head. “Most of the people who come to us are orphans with no home. He was my protégé. He came to me when he was thirteen. I watched him grow.”

That explained the look of pure sadness and anger on Alaric’s face as he stared at the boy. It also explained why his clothes were rumpled and it looked like he hadn’t slept.

“If there is anything he needs-”

“The only thing he needs is for the bastard who did this to be put down like a dog,” he hissed. “These hunters need to be dealt with.”

“They will be,” I assured him quietly. “I promise.”
