Chapter 94

Kai spent the whole day in back to back meetings while I handled most of the pack paperwork.

By afternoon, I was exhausted and the words on the files began to blur, but I was determined to get through at least half of the pile in front of me. Half of them weren’t even for our pack. They were complaints from other packs about land disputes, resources and military.

I’d forgotten that I wasn’t just Luna, I was also the Queen and that came with its own mountain load of work.

The door to my office opened without warning and I jumped in my seat, fearing that it was the hunter again. My heart was hammering in my chest and I grabbed a pen. I wasn’t sure what I could do with it, but I was determined to do something.

“Relax, princess, it’s me.”

I heard Kai’s voice before I recognized his figure in the doorway. I sighed in relief.

“Fuck, you scared me.”

“I’m sorry, baby.” He made his way over to me, pressing a soft kiss to my temple. “I brought you lunch.”

It was only then I noticed the plastic bag in his hands. Whatever was inside smelled really good, and my stomach rumbled in anticipation, but I still had so much work.

“I’ll get to it later, thank you. You can put it on the floor.”

He ignored me, taking the file straight out of my hands and moving it to a corner of the desk.

“Kai, I was reading that.”

“I can tell,” he drawled, taking out the bowls of food. “Eat, Daisy. There will always be work waiting. The work of a royal never ends, but you need to eat.”

I knew he was right, so I relented and grabbed the bowl closest to me. It was filled with buffalo wings. The next one had pasta

and another had rice.

“How much food did you buy?” I asked as he dragged the other chair over to my side.

“Enough,” was his response. “Eat.”

Eating lunch with him felt normal despite the fact that we’d only had lunch together probably five times since we’ve been mated. He was always at work, and I was always with Scarlett.

We didn’t speak about the hunter or his meetings, and I pretended not to notice the small splatter of blood that was peeking out through his collar or that his shirt was different from the one he left the house with.

He told me they managed to catch one of the hunters. I knew what that meant. I knew the torture he would face. It was easier for me to pretend I didn’t because it made it easier for my conscience to deal with.

“You can ask you know,” Kai said softly. “About where I’ve been.”

“I know where you’ve been. Did you get any information out of him?”

He shook his head. “Nothing we didn’t already know. The hunters are very meticulous. The guy we caught was a low ranking soldier. He doesn’t know shit. They live very close to the human towns. If we don’t get our facts straight, we could risk killing humans in the process.”

I cursed aloud. “That sucks.”

“Yeah, princess, it does. Damien is trying to get some more information out of him. If anyone can get anything out, it’ll be

him.”

“What happens to him after you get the answer? Do you kill him immediately?”

“Usually, I would, but I think it’s best to have him alive if we ever have more questions later.”

The thought of him being kept alive and in a perpetual state of pain did not sit right with me. It was weird considering the fact that I didn’t care about Lucas being tortured. Perhaps it was because I had a personal experience with Lucas and not this

hunter.

However, I knew it was for the best, so I said nothing. I merely shoved a spoonful of food into my mouth.

Kai opened his mouth to speak, but the sound of my phone ringing cut him off. I smiled when I saw Scarlett’s name on the

screen.

“Hey!” I exclaimed when her face popped up on my screen. “I was beginning to wonder if you’d forgotten about me.”

She feigned a gasp. “I would never. I’ve been so busy.”

“Is everything good over there?”

She nodded. “I think I found something.”
