Daisy was exhausted.

She tried to hide it, but it was obvious from the way her shoulders drooped as she walked, and the way she kept her eyes to the ground, trying to avoid looking at everyone.
I had a bit more work to do, but I asked for it to be emailed to me so I could do it at home. She’d already made it clear that she wouldn’t leave until I was leaving as well.
“I can’t wait to get home and take a long shower,” she groaned, stepping into the car as I opened the door for her.
“Do you know what you want to eat tonight?” I asked and she thought about it for a moment before shrugging.
“I’m too tired to think.”
I laughed at how dramatic she was being and pressed a kiss to her temple. “I think there’s some leftover pasta in the fridge. Would you like that?”
“I don’t want pasta.”
“We can stop and get dinner on the way home. We can get whatever you-”
“I want mac and cheese,” she cut me off. “And chili.”
“Together?”
“No, I’ll eat the chili after the mac. Don’t judge me.”
I raised my hands in mock surrender. “I wouldn’t dare. We’ll have to stop by the store, and I’ll make you dinner while you’re in the bath.”
“I love you,” she mumbled, grabbing my face in her hands and kissing me. “You’re the best.”
In that moment, I would have driven to the fucking moon if she’d asked me to/There was something about that soft, almost dazed look in her eyes as she spoke. She looked like she was a second away from falling asleep, and her voice was so small that it was barely over a whisper.
She looked like she wanted to say something more, but someone cleared their throat behind us. She glanced over my shoulder, trying to see who it was. As soon as she locked eyes with the person, she frowned.
“Am I interrupting something?”
The expression on her face suddenly made sense.
I sighed deeply, kissing Daisy once more for good measure before turning around.
“Hi, Eva.”
Eva stood in front of me, smiling sheepishly. She was dressed down in simple sweats and an oversized hoodie. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun and she honestly looked more casual now than I had ever seen her.

“I was wondering if I could talk to you for a few minutes,” she said softly, shuffling awkwardly on her ankles.
“I have to take Daisy home-”
“I’ll be fine, go talk to her,” Daisy cut in. “I’ll just wait here.”

I turned to her, raising a brow. She was not Eva’s biggest fan. It was surprising that she was signing off on this.
“Are you sure?” I asked and she nodded.
“Knock yourself out.”

She turned away from me before I could say anything more, and when I tried to reach her via the mind link, there was a wall blocking the two of us.
I turned back to Eva who was watching me eagerly, and with a sigh, I gestured for her to follow me.
I led her a bit of a distance away from the car, just in case she were to say something that would upset Daisy.
“To be honest, I didn’t think you’d want to meet with him,” she began with a soft laugh.
“I was going to refuse,” I admitted.
She winced. “I probably deserve that.”
“You deserve much more than that, Eva. You said things to my mate that weren’t true. You invaded her space You could have caused serious damage to my relationship.”
and privacy.
“I know, and I’m sorry. I know it won’t make up for it and that’s why I’m here to tell you that I’m leaving the pack tomorrow. I’ll drive out to the nearest town and have my father come get me from there.”
As much as I would have loved that, I couldn’t let her leave. Now wasn’t the time to have people moving in and out of the pack unless they had the guards to protect them and right now, I couldn’t spare any extra guards.
“You don’t have to leave, Eva.”
“I do. I feel like I’ve been more of a hindrance than anything since I got here. I thought we could go back to being the way we were but obviously that can’t happen. I don’t want to cause any problems.”
I sighed deeply. “I think it’s best if you just stayed here for now, okay? I don’t think you’re a bad person, and I’m sure Daisy doesn’t either. You did something fucking stupid, and as long as we can be sure it won’t happen again, we’re good.”
“Are you sure?” She looked hopeful and younger, kind of like the Eva I knew growing up. It felt like a crime to smash that.
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“Thank you so much.” She wrapped her arms around me tightly. “I really didn’t want to go home. Dad has been a pain in my ass for the past year.”
I carefully unwrapped her arms from my body. It felt wrong to be hugging her, especially after everything that had happened with Daisy.
“I know I’m probably enemy number one right now, but someday, I’d like to have dinner with you and Daisy, maybe get to know her better. I really think that we could be good friends if given the chance.”
Daisy would rather chew her own foot than agree to that.
“I’ll let her know,” I said simply.
“Just give me a date and a time. I’ll make the dinner and handle everything. Thank you again for letting me stay.”
I couldn’t tell her that the only reason I let her stay was because if she left, the chances of her being caught and killed by an insane hunter were very high. The last thing I needed was for something to happen to Eva.
She was her father’s only child, and he loved her more than life itself. He would bring down the heavens if she were hurt,
