Chapter 96

I stood in front of the shop that Daisy had directed me to.

It wasn’t hard to miss. It was two stories high with large glass windows and a massive signboard. People were walked out, giving me distrustful looks as they passed, but I ignored it. I’d seen a variation of those looks over the past two days.

“Are you going to buy something or are you just window shopping?” a woman asked, her hands crossed over her chest.

She had dark hair that was dyed green at the tips and her eyes were a bright shade of blue that would have made even the oceans jealous. I could see hints of a tattoo pecking out from the collar of her shirt and her eyes, although wary, were not

angry.

“Are you Vera?”

She hesitated for a moment. “It depends on who’s asking.”

“I’m Scarlett-”

“I know who you are,” she cut me off. “What do

you

want?”

“I just want to talk.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “I haven’t done shit. Those assholes in the council have had it out for me for years. They don’t like that I don’t bend over and lick their asses, and for the record, I won’t lick yours either.”

“Fortunately for us both, I’m not into that kind of thing,” I joked with a smile. “Can I come in?”

I could tell she didn’t know what to think of me.

She nodded after a brief moment of silence and stepped aside for me. Once I was in the store, she turned the sign to closed and gestured for me to take a seat.

“Is there somewhere more private we can talk?”

“I’m not going anywhere with you that people can’t come to my aid if I scream. You could be here to kill me.”

I laughed.

It wasn’t the first time I’d heard something like that while in this pack. It was clear that they didn’t have a clear understanding of us and grossly underestimated our strengths.

“If I wanted you dead, you’d be dead before you could scream.”

“That’s not going to convince me to go into a secluded place with you,” she deadpanned.

“Fair enough.” I took the seat she offered and gestured for her to sit opposite me. “Daisy sent me to you. She said I could trust you.”

Vera snorted. “Trust is a bit of a stretch. You can’t trust anyone in this pack, me inclusive. We all have our hidden agendas.”

“What’s yours?”

“I want out of here.” She said it so simply. “If you’re friends with Daisy then she has probably told you how horrible it is here. Trust me, she didn’t exaggerate. If you’re not among the high and mighty, you’re treated like shit. I suppose it isn’t something Daisy will ever have to worry about again, she is Queen after all.”

There was no bitterness in her voice, just hard resignation. She’d come to terms with her reality a long time ago.

“I’d like to make you an offer, Vera,” I began and she raised a brow. “If you help me, I’ll take you to the palace.”

“You want me to start over with another bunch of entitled pricks? No thanks,” she snorted. “At least here I’m among the wolves. There, I’ll be a wolf and an omega, a second class person in both senses. I’ll pass.”

“We don’t have omegas.”

She stilled. “That’s a lie. You created omegas.”

The amount of misinformation swirling around this pack about lycans was enough to give me a fucking aneurysm. I couldn’t count how many times I’d corrected the council members on things they believed were true about us.

“Omegas have been outlawed amongst lycans for centuries now,” I told her. “Now, I can’t deny that you may meet people who will treat you differently because you are a wolf, but the average lycan doesn’t give a shit. Our Luna is a wolf too.”

She was silent for a long moment. “I’ll think about it. What do you want in exchange?”

I took out the map that I found and lay it on the table in front of us.

She stared at me like I was insane or something, but I ignored her and pointed out the landmarks on it.

“Do these look familiar?”

“This is a fucking joke, right?” she asked but I just stared at her blankly.

“Are you going to help me or not, Vera? I don’t have time for this.”

“It’s not that I won’t help you. It’s that you don’t need my help for this.” She pointed at the landmark of a wolf. “This looks like the wolf statue. It’s less than five minutes away from the pack house.

The trees could be anywhere to be honest. We’re surrounded by forests, but that building, the one with the flag atop it is Lucas’ house.”

My brows furrowed in confusion. “I thought he lived in the pack house.”

“He did, but he had this little condo where he took his women. It’s not surprising Daisy didn’t recognize it, he never took her there.”

“How do

you know it?”

She smiled ruefully. “Take a wild guess. You don’t exactly say no when the Alpha comes calling.”

She stood to her feet.

“I can take you there if you want. It’s not like I have anything better to do.”

“Thank you.”

She merely waved me off.

She sat in the passenger seat, giving me directions as I drove.

I pretended not to notice her taking in the vehicle with an impressed expression.

“How is Daisy?” she asked after we’d been driving for a while.

“She’s good. Didn’t you see her when she came here with Kai?”

She shook her head. “Not up close, no. We weren’t exactly friends when she was here. We worked together and we talked, but
