I woke up immediately knowing that something was off. I couldn’t explain it, but something in the air felt wrong.

Kai didn’t seem to notice it, so I assumed it was just me being paranoid, but the more I went on with my day, the more the feeling grew. I went over the security to make sure everything was in place; hell, I was a second away from calling a meeting with the generals myself just to understand what was causing the feeling.

“Maybe you’re just tired,” Kai offered when he walked into my office at noon.

He leaned against the doorway appearing completely at ease but I could see the worry in his eyes.

“I don’t think that’s it, Kai,” I sighed. “It’s something more.”

He pushed off the doorway and walked deeper into the office until he was standing opposite me. “Maybe it’s everything that’s been happening. You could use a day off.”

A day off sounded amazing, but that wasn’t it either. I didn’t know what it was, but I knew what it wasn’t. It was like my body was poised for something terrible to happen, like a metaphorical shoe that was about to drop.

“I hate not knowing how to help you, princess,” he sighed. “Do you want to go home for the day? We can call it quits.”

I snorted. “I’m the Luna, I can’t just have half days because I feel weird. I have a duty to this pack and everywhere else. There’s so much to be done.”

Kai didn’t say anything, he just stared at me with a hint of pride in his eyes and the corner of his lips tugging upwards.

“What?” I asked, suddenly feeling self-conscious. “Is something wrong?”

“No, you just… you sound like a Queen, perhaps it’s time I stopped calling you princess.”

I rolled my eyes at him.

The phone rang, cutting off whatever conversation we were having. I sighed, answering without glancing at the caller ID. I was expecting calls from multiple people, it didn’t matter who it was.

“I found something.”

I sat up straighter at the sound of Scarlett’s voice and immediately put the phone on speaker.

“Kai is here,” I told her. “Tell us everything.”

“Vera was a lot of help, and she’s pretty cool, I don’t know why you never mentioned her earlier. I would’ve had a friend in this damned place-”

“Scarlett, focus,” Kai chided.

“Sorry,” she sounded sheepish. “The map led me to an open field. I found a wooden box buried in the ground. I managed to break it open and inside were a bunch of pictures of children. I don’t know if they’re human or not, but they look like they’re being held somewhere. I’m sending the pictures over to your laptop as we speak.”

Leaving the phone on the table, I pulled open my laptop just in time for the pictures to begin pouring in. I felt bile climb up my throat as I took in the state those kids were in. They were dirty, most of them wore torn clothes, and some had bruises on their bodies.

It was clear they were being trafficked and imprisoned.

“Fuck,” Kai cursed aloud. “Is there anything that can tell us where they are?”

“There’s a postcard in the box and another picture but it just looks like a street. I figured it’s easier for them to communicate in pictures rather than just flat out writing things down in case someone finds out.”

“Did you send the picture?” I asked and she hummed.

I had to scroll through the pictures of all those children before I finally got to the postcard. Kai peered over my shoulder, analyzing it carefully.

“I know that town,” he said softly. “I can’t be sure, but I think I remember Damien saying something about it.”

He took a picture on his phone before excusing himself, presumably to show Damien. Once he was gone, I shut the laptop, but it didn’t take the pictures out of my head.

“Thank you, Scarlett,” I said after a brief silence. “You did amazing.”

*Do you think they’re human?” she asked and I fell silent. “The kids, I mean.”

“I don’t know.”

It was the most honest answer I could give. There were no defining factors in those pictures. I couldn’t even accurately guess their ages because of how badly they’d been treated.

“You’re going to find them, right?”

I swallowed deeply. “We’ll do our very best.”

“Careful, Daisy, you’re starting to sound like a politician. A few months ago, you would have given me a straightforward answer and said you’d die trying.”

I wanted to protest, but I quickly realized that she was right. Somehow, I’d grown more diplomatic, more careful of my answers. I wasn’t sure if it was spending time with Kai or just growing up in general.
