Chapter 98

“He knows where it is!” Kai announced as he rushed back into my office.

I was in the middle of reading a document the southern and eastern pack had sent over, trying to get us to settle a land dispute. I immediately dropped it and turned my attention to my mate.

“Damien?” I asked and he nodded.

“It’s a human town not too far from here. It’s a three hour drive at most. When I get there, we might be able to find out where the picture was taken. If I leave now, I should get there by nightfall.”

“I’m coming with you,” I said, rising to my feet.

Kai went still. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

“You must be insane if you think I’m letting you do this alone.”

“Damien can go with me.”

“No way,” I exclaimed, immediately shutting him down. “I need to be there. I need to see the kids for myself.”

“Daisy-”

“I spent the last hour looking at every kid in those pictures. I practically memorized their faces.”

I saw the moment he dropped his weapons. His face grew softer and a sigh left his lips. “Why would you do that?”

“There were nine boys and eight girls,” I continued. “They looked young. The oldest looked to be fifteen at most. They have been starved and beaten and chained. Some of them have red marks on their wrists. I need to see each and every one them and make sure they’re alive and safe.”

Kai said nothing for a moment, he just stared at me.

I stood my ground, crossing my arms over my chest. I wasn’t going to budge, not on this one at least. If it meant sneaking out of the pack to follow him, then so be it, but I was going to be there.

“It may not be safe,” he said softly. “What if the hunters are there? What if we are unknowingly walking into a trap? I need you to be safe.”

“I’m not safe here, Kai. Every single time we are apart, he finds his way to me. He broke into our house.”

“I’ll have guards watching over you every second of the day,” he argued and I snorted.

“He can bypass guards, Kai, he has proven that to us. And the guards can’t have eyes on me at all times. I’ll go to sleep at some point, and I’ll go to the bathroom. This man is smart. I’m coming with you. It’s the best option and you know it.”

He wasn’t pleased, but when he didn’t say anything in response, I knew I’d gotten the point across.

“I don’t like this,” he muttered. “But you’re right, you’re safest with me.”

I let out a sigh of relief. “When do we leave?”

“In an hour.”

We were able to stop by the house and pack a few clothes into a bag, nothing too conspicuous, just enough to get us through two days if for any reason we had to stay longer.

Damien met up with us at the house and he climbed into the backseat.

“I didn’t know you were coming,” I said as he got into the car.

“Despite you trying to kick me out of the mission,” he teased.

I held up my hands in mock surrender. “I have to look out for me first.”

“Don’t worry, I respect it,” he winked and I couldn’t help but smile.

I turned to Kai. “Is it just the three of us? You were worried about it being an ambush.”

“If multiple people show up in a quiet human town at once, people are bound to whisper,” Damien explained. “We’ll go first, a group of guards will show up overnight, and the others will come in tomorrow. We’ll come in using different entrances. By the time people piece it together, we would’ve already found the house.”

They’d thought the whole thing out, but I still couldn’t ignore that gnawing feeling in the center of my gut.

“It’ll be fine,” Damien continued, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. “I have a contact in the town who will be able to help us.”

“Is this contact a man or a woman?” I asked, cocking a brow.

He just smirked and leaned back into his seat. “You’ll see.”

We drove for three hours.

I tried my best to stay awake for all of it, but within the first hour of the car ride, I’d fallen asleep. By the time I woke up again, someone had draped a blanket over my body, and Kai was speaking to Damien.

“The inn is just up ahead,” Damien said. “I already called ahead. They know we’re coming.”

“Are you sure we can trust this person?” Kai asked. “We don’t want anyone accidentally leaking our location.”

“We can. Darla is a wolf. She’s a rogue, but she’s good people. I met her on my trips.”

“Did you sleep with her?” I asked and both men turned to me.

I stretched in my seat, rubbing the remnants of sleep from my eyes as I waited for Damien to answer my question.

“I have to say, I’m a bit offended by that question. I don’t sleep with everyone I meet, Daisy.”

I didn’t get to respond the way I wanted because Kai pulled up at the inn,

A woman was waiting for us in the doorway, and she gestured for us to drive towards the back. She wore a beautiful grey dress that showed off ample cleavage and did nothing to hide the voluptuous curves she had.

Once we’d parked, she waited for us at the back door with a lantern in hand.
