The room in the inn smelled like cinnamon and candle wax. There was a bit of mold on the walls, but otherwise, it was fine. The bed was large enough to hold Kai and I, but his feet would be dangling off the edge and we’d be pressed firmly against

each other.

“Do you want to take a shower first?” Kai asked. “I’m not sure how much hot water this place will have.”

“Won’t you take a shower too?”

“Later, I need to run some things by Damien first.” He kissed my forehead softly. “I’ll be back; get comfortable.”

I tried my best, but it was hard to relax when I knew exactly why we were here.

The water in the bathroom was warm at best and once I was out, I pulled one of Kai’s shirts over my head and crawled into the bed. The blanket was surprisingly warm and thick despite every other thing in the room being sup bar.

I took out my phone and scrolled through the pictures of the children once more. I memorized their faces, taking in the fear, the anger, the resignation that was etched onto their little features. My heart ached for them, for the lives they were ripped from, for the families that missed them.

I wasn’t sure how long I sat there just staring at their pictures. The candle in the room was almost out by the time Kai returned. He looked surprised to see me still seated up in bed.

“I thought you would have fallen asleep by now,” he murmured, locking the door behind him.

“I slept for most of the drive here, remember?”

He smiled softly, pulling off his shirt with one hand. “The first batch of guards have arrived. They’ve taken up residence in a farm house that Darla owns on the other side of town.”

“Are you sure we can trust this Darla woman?”

It was fairly convenient that Damien happened to have someone here that lived in this town and had both the means and willingness to help us. I appreciated it, but I couldn’t help but be skeptical.

“Damien swears that she is trustworthy, and I trust Damien.” His pants went next. “Besides, we don’t have many options. Anyone else will talk. We have to be as careful as we can.”

I sighed deeply, leaning back against the pillows. “I don’t like this. We’re practically sitting ducks. If she sells us out-”

“Let’s pray she doesn’t,” he cut me off.

He made his way over to me, wearing nothing but his briefs. Every nerve in my body came alive as he stopped in front of me, towering over me as he leaned forward. My breath caught in my throat and I struggled to swallow the knot that formed quickly.

“I don’t like this either, princess, but we don’t have many options,” he said softly. “We’ll be as quick as we can. Tomorrow, we can ask around for the street and at night, we strike, okay?”

I nodded slowly. “Okay.”

His lips lingered on my forehead and I inhaled his scent, trying to calm myself.

“I’m going to take a shower,” he said, pulling back. “Try to sleep, okay?”

I knew I wouldn’t sleep, not until he was next to me anyway, but I nodded nonetheless. I lay in bed and pulled the covers up to my chin, listening to the sound of the shower running. I turned off the lights and waited, listening to Kai rummaging

He turned off the lights and crawled into bed behind me, his hand resting on my hip as he pulled me closer to him. I felt his warm lips brush against my shoulders and an involuntary shiver ran down my spine.

“I should have known you’d still be awake. You don’t do as you’re told often, do you?”

I shook my head. “Sorry, it’s too late to change now. You should have asked before you mated me.”

A small laugh left his lips. “I think I can manage.”

We were silent for a moment.

His hand on my hips traced mindless patterns and his warm breath fanned my ear, lulling me into a sense of peace and warmth. I could feel my eyes beginning to droop, but there was one more thing that was on my mind.

“Do

you

think we’ll be able to pull this off?” I asked directly into the mind link.

I couldn’t bring myself to utter the words out loud for fear that I’d be jinxing, our agenda.

He was silent for a moment before sighing. “I have to, princess. The first step to doing something is believing.”

“I don’t want your optimism, Kai. I want you to be honest with me.”

“I don’t know,” he answered after a beat of silence. “I don’t know what we’re going to walk into tomorrow and that’s why I wanted you to stay at home. It could be a trap, those kids could be dead, or worse. I don’t like when I don’t have all the pieces.”
