Wednesday, 8:00 PM. The Georgetown Townhouse.

The heavy oak doors of the study were closed, sealing us inside the nerve center of my newly forged shadow empire. The atmosphere in the room was electric, a potent mixture of exhaustion, triumph, and lingering adrenaline.

I sat at the head of the massive mahogany dining table we had repurposed as a conference desk.

To my right sat Victoria Sterling. The Ice Queen of Wall Street had been released from federal custody less than forty-eight hours ago, the DOJ’s case against Vanguard Holdings evaporating the moment the half-billion-dollar capital injection hit their ledgers. She looked slightly paler than usual, the stress of the federal detention center leaving faint shadows under her piercing blue eyes, but her posture was as rigid and imperious as ever.

Nia, Darius, and Ethan occupied the middle seats, the loyal soldiers and my close friends who had bled to make this victory possible.

And standing at the far end of the table, serving drinks from a silver tray with perfectly blank, obedient expressions, were the two most powerful women in Washington D.C.

And Senator Margaret Hale, the Kingmaker.

Victoria took a sip of her scotch, her eyes tracking Senator Hale as the older woman poured a glass of water for Nia.

"I have to admit, Jake," Victoria said, her voice a low, smooth purr that carried across the silent room. "When the FBI kicked down the doors of Vanguard and dragged me out in handcuffs, I thought you had finally overplayed your hand. I thought we were finished."

"I told you I would protect you, Victoria," I said, leaning back in my chair, the [Emperor’s Presence] filling the room with a warm, grounding authority. "The board just required a rather aggressive reshuffling."

"Aggressive is an understatement," Sofia murmured, her dark eyes fixed on Evelyn Cross. "You didn’t just beat the federal government, Jake. You bought it."

"I didn’t buy it," I corrected softly. "I broke it. And then I rebuilt it to serve us."

I looked down the table at Senator Hale. She was wearing a simple, unadorned black dress, stripped of her usual power suits and political armor. Her Willpower was completely shattered. She was a hollow vessel, filled only with the System’s absolute conditioning.

"Margaret," I said.

Hale immediately stopped what she was doing, placed the silver tray on the sideboard, and walked to the foot of the table. She stood at attention, her hands clasped in front of her, her eyes fixed on the polished wood.

"Yes, Jake," she said, her voice devoid of the booming, charismatic authority that had defined her career.

Victoria let out a soft, breathy laugh, shifting in her seat. The sight of the legendary Kingmaker reduced to an obedient servant was a potent aphrodisiac for the Ice Queen. I could see the Corruption stat flaring in Victoria’s eyes.

"Tell the table the current status of the asset forfeiture accounts," I ordered.

"The accounts are empty," Hale recited mechanically. "Two billion, one hundred and forty-five million dollars were successfully transferred to Aether Capital’s offshore holdings. The digital ledger proving the existence of the slush fund is in your possession. My office has drafted legislation that will permanently shield Vanguard Holdings and Aldridge Enterprises from future federal audits, which I will introduce to the Judiciary Committee on Monday."

"Flawless," Ethan whispered, shaking his head in disbelief. "We actually did it. We own D.C."

"Not quite," Hale said.
