Chapter 181: The long war

[Jake’s POV]

The interior of the Gulfstream G650 smelled like antiseptic, copper, and the sharp, metallic tang of adrenaline.

We were thirty thousand feet above the Atlantic Ocean, tearing through the stratosphere at Mach 0.9, leaving the burning ruins of Isabella Vane’s Swiss fortress far behind us. But the silence in the cabin wasn’t the silence of victory. It was the heavy, exhausted quiet of survivors who knew they had just barely escaped with their lives.

I was lying shirtless on the plush leather sofa in the rear of the cabin. The pain suppression protocols the System had engaged during the escape were beginning to wear off, replaced by a deep, burning agony radiating from the bullet hole in my right side.

Claire was kneeling beside me, her hands covered in latex gloves, her face pale and intensely focused. She had stripped away my ruined tactical vest and sweater, cleaning the entry and exit wounds with terrifying efficiency.

"The bullet passed clean through," Claire murmured, her voice tight as she applied a heavy pressure bandage to my side. "It missed the kidney and the major arteries by less than an inch. You are the luckiest, stupidest man I have ever met."

"I aim to please," I rasped, wincing as she pulled the medical tape tight.

"Don’t make jokes, Jake," Claire snapped, her composure finally cracking. Her hands trembled slightly as she finished securing the bandage. She looked up at me, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "I watched you take that hit on the drone feed. I watched you go down in the snow. For ten seconds, I thought... I thought you were dead."

I reached up, my blood-stained fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"I promised you I’d come back," I said softly. "Proof first. Then Sofia. Then me."

Claire let out a shuddering breath, leaning forward and resting her forehead against my uninjured shoulder. She didn’t cry, but I could feel the tension radiating from her body, the sheer, overwhelming relief that the nightmare was over.

"You kept your promise," she whispered.

"He always does," Sofia Aldridge said, stepping into the rear cabin.

Sofia looked immaculate, having changed into a fresh, tailored black suit, though the exhaustion in her eyes mirrored my own. She carried two crystal glasses of amber liquid, handing one to Claire and offering the other to me.

I took the glass, the heavy, smoky burn of the scotch grounding me in the present.

Sofia sat down in the leather armchair across from the sofa, crossing her legs and looking at me with a mixture of profound respect and cold, analytical calculation.

"Katarina Volkov’s medical team cleared Darius," Sofia reported, taking a slow sip of her drink. "He has a mild concussion and a few shrapnel cuts, but he refused painkillers and is currently asleep in the forward cabin. Katarina herself has returned to her syndicate to prepare for the inevitable retaliation."

"Isabella is going to hunt her down," I said, shifting slightly on the sofa to ease the pressure on my side. "Katarina just blew a hole in the side of her mountain. Isabella won’t let that stand."

"Katarina knows the risks," Sofia replied smoothly. "She has been fighting a shadow war with the Vane Consortium for five years. Tonight, we gave her the opening she needed. With the physical ledgers destroyed, Isabella’s blackmail network across Europe is in ashes. Politicians, judges, and corporate CEOs who have been under her thumb for a decade are suddenly waking up to find their leashes cut."

"It’s a power vacuum," Claire realized, sitting back on her heels. "Isabella’s empire is built on leverage. Without the ledgers, she can’t enforce her will. Her allies are going to turn on her."

"Some will," Sofia agreed. "But do not underestimate her, Claire. Isabella Vane is not a woman who relies on a single weapon. She told Jake she has digital fragments, encrypted backups hidden across the continent. It will take her months to rebuild her network, but she still has billions of dollars in liquid capital and the loyalty of the European Central Bank."

I stared at the amber liquid in my glass.

"She’s wounded," I said, my voice low and hard. "But she’s not dead. And now, she knows exactly who we are. She knows we can reach her. This isn’t a corporate hostile takeover anymore, Sofia. This is a blood feud."

Sofia nodded slowly, her eyes darkening. "Yes. It is."

She set her glass down on the mahogany table and leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. The Queen of Vanguard was looking at me not as a mentor, not as a target, but as an absolute equal in a war that was about to consume the globe.

"When you first came to me, Jake," Sofia murmured, "you were a brilliant, ambitious boy looking for a way into the room. You wanted wealth. You wanted power. You wanted to conquer the board."

She reached out, her fingers lightly tracing the edge of the bandage on my side.

"You have done all of that," she continued, her voice dropping to a fierce, intimate whisper. "You broke Victoria Sterling. You secured four point two billion dollars. You built an Academic Fortress with Elena Vance. You destroyed the Ash Room, and you burned Isabella Vane’s mountain to the ground. You are no longer a player in the game, Jake. You are the King."
