Chapter 196: The Debt

[Jake’s POV]

The silence in the back room of the Golden Koi was absolute, broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the air conditioning unit and the faint crackle of the dark cigarette burning between Madam Bai’s elegant fingers.

I stayed on my knees, one hand clutching my stomach where the guard had punched me, playing the role of the terrified, out-of-his-depth older brother. Beside me, Ethan groaned, pushing himself up onto his elbows. A thin trickle of blood ran down his chin from where his face had been slammed into the mahjong table.

Madam Bai didn’t speak immediately. She simply watched us. Her dark, calculating eyes moved over Ethan’s disheveled hoodie, then shifted to my cheap trench coat. She was dissecting us, weighing our value against the trouble we had just caused on her floor. In the Macau underworld, people like us were usually dragged out to an alley and beaten until our bones splintered. The fact that we were in her office meant she saw an angle.

"Ten thousand dollars," Madam Bai finally said. Her voice was smooth, melodic, and laced with a cold, terrifying authority. Her English was flawless, carrying the faint, polished accent of a British boarding school education. "That is what your brother lost at my tables tonight. A respectable sum for a tourist. But then, he decided to accuse one of my lieutenants of cheating."

She took a slow drag from her cigarette, the cherry glowing bright red in the dim light of the office. She exhaled a thin stream of gray smoke, her eyes never leaving mine.

"In Macau, reputation is currency," she continued, her tone conversational but deadly. "When a foreigner stands up in my parlor and screams that my games are rigged, it damages my currency. It makes the locals wonder if the Golden Koi is losing its grip. It makes the other triad factions wonder if I am growing weak."

"He was drunk," I rasped, forcing my voice to tremble slightly. I looked up at her, projecting desperation. "He didn’t know what he was saying. He’s an idiot. Please, just let us go. We won’t come back."

Madam Bai smiled. It wasn’t a warm expression. It was the smile of a spider watching a fly struggle in its web.

"Let you go?" she repeated softly. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the polished mahogany desk. "Noah Reed. That is the name on the passport in your pocket, yes? And your brother, Liam Cross. Two Canadians with no local ties, no local muscle, and no respect for the ecosystem you just walked into."

She tapped her cigarette against a jade ashtray. "You owe me for the insult, Noah. The standard penalty for accusing a triad dealer of cheating is the removal of the right hand. It sends a clear message to the rest of the floor. But I am a businesswoman. I prefer capital over blood."

Ethan swallowed hard, his eyes widening in genuine panic. "Capital? We don’t have any more money! That ten grand was everything I had!"

"I know," Madam Bai said smoothly. "My men searched you. You have exactly forty-two dollars in your wallet, Liam. Which means you cannot pay your debt with cash."

She leaned back in her leather chair, crossing her legs. The slit in her crimson cheongsam parted slightly, revealing a flash of pale, flawless thigh. It was a calculated distraction, a subtle flex of her femininity designed to unbalance the men sitting bleeding on her floor.

"So," she murmured, her dark eyes locking onto mine. "Tell me, Noah Reed. How are you going to pay me for your brother’s life?"

This was the moment. The pivot point of the entire infiltration. If I pushed too hard, she would see through the facade and realize I wasn’t a terrified tourist. If I didn’t push hard enough, she would hand us over to the guards and we would end up at the bottom of the Pearl River.

I took a deep breath, slowly pushing myself up from the floor. I didn’t stand to my full height. I kept my shoulders slightly hunched, maintaining the posture of a man who was beaten but desperate to survive.

"We can work," I said, my voice steadying just a fraction.

Madam Bai raised an elegant eyebrow. "Work? You are a tourist. What possible use could I have for you?"

"Liam is a logistics consultant," I lied smoothly, feeding her the legend Nia had built for us. "He knows how to move things. Supply chains, customs routing, blind shipping manifests. He’s a degenerate gambler, but he’s a genius with freight. And I..." I hesitated, letting a flicker of dark resolve bleed into my eyes. "I clean up his messes. I know how to handle people who don’t want to be handled."

Madam Bai studied me in silence. The air in the room grew heavy. She was a woman who survived by reading people, by finding the hidden cracks in their armor. I had to give her a crack to find.

"You clean up his messes," she repeated softly, testing the words. She glanced at the scarred guard standing by the door, then back to me. "You took a punch from my enforcer without crying out. You kept your feet under you when they dragged you in here. You are not a soldier, Noah Reed, but you are not a coward either."

She took another drag from her cigarette. "The Golden Koi is a small pond, but it connects to a very large river. The Imperial Song Dynasty controls the flow of that river. I am merely a toll collector. But even toll collectors have problems with people who refuse to pay."

She opened a drawer in her desk and pulled out a thick manila folder, tossing it onto the mahogany surface.

"There is a man named Chen," Madam Bai said, her tone shifting from predatory to strictly business. "He runs a string of electronics warehouses in the Inner Harbour. He uses my parlor to launder his excess cash. For the last three months, his payments have been light. He claims the shipping tariffs are eating his margins. I know he is lying. I know he is holding out on me."

She leaned forward, her dark eyes pinning me to the spot.

"My usual enforcers are known to him," she continued. "If I send them, he will hide the ledgers and claim poverty. But you... you are ghosts. Two desperate westerners looking to pay off a debt. He will not see you coming."

Ethan looked at me, his face pale. "Jake—I mean, Noah. We can’t—"

"Shut up, Liam," I snapped, playing the role of the protective, exasperated brother perfectly. I looked back at Madam Bai. "What do you want us to do?"

"I want you to go to his primary warehouse," Madam Bai said, tapping a manicured fingernail against the manila folder. "I want you to find his real ledgers. The ones he keeps off the books. And I want you to bring them to me. If you do this, your brother’s debt is forgiven. If you fail, or if you try to run..."

She smiled, a chilling, beautiful expression.

"...I will have my men find you at the airport. And I will take both of your hands."

The mechanical hum vibrated at the base of my skull.
