[Jake’s POV]
The transition from street-level runner to the Matriarch’s personal shadow was instantaneous and absolute.
I no longer slept in the mildew-scented safehouse with Ethan. I was moved into a spare room in Madam Bai’s—Li’s—fortified penthouse. My cheap canvas jacket was replaced by a tailored, charcoal-gray suit that concealed the suppressed USP tactical pistol perfectly against my ribs. I was given full clearance to the Golden Koi’s security feeds, access to the triad’s encrypted communication channels, and a front-row seat to the slow, bleeding death of Li’s empire.
The Black Lotus wasn’t just making a move; they were executing a systematic strangulation.
I stood in the corner of Li’s private VIP room on the third floor of the Golden Koi, my hands clasped behind my back, my face a mask of professional indifference. The room was opulent, decorated with antique silk screens and heavy mahogany furniture, but the atmosphere was toxic.
Li sat at the head of a long, low table, her posture rigid, her face an unreadable mask of cold authority. Across from her sat the emissary from the Black Lotus.
He was a young man, barely thirty, wearing a flashy white suit and a diamond-encrusted watch that cost more than most of the Outer Harbour residents made in a lifetime. He didn’t have the hardened, violent look of a street thug. He looked like a corporate raider, arrogant and utterly convinced of his own superiority.
"The terms are generous, Madam Bai," the emissary said, leaning back in his chair and steepling his fingers. He didn’t bother using her first name. It was a calculated sign of disrespect. "The Four Dragons recognize the historical significance of the Golden Koi. We are willing to let you retain nominal control of the parlor. But the docks, the warehouses, and the street-level protection rackets will be absorbed by the Black Lotus, effective immediately."
Li took a slow sip of her tea, her hand perfectly steady. "You are asking me to surrender ninety percent of my revenue streams, Mr. Wei. That is not a negotiation. That is an execution."
Wei smiled, a slick, oily expression. "It is a transition. The Outer Harbour requires modern management. Your husband built a strong foundation, but you have allowed it to stagnate. The Black Lotus has the capital and the manpower to elevate this district. If you resist, the transition will simply become... messy."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, his voice dropping to a mocking whisper. "You have lost three lieutenants this week alone, Madam Bai. They saw the writing on the wall. You have no soldiers left who are willing to die for a sinking ship. Take the deal. Retire with dignity."
I watched the muscles in Li’s jaw tighten. Wei was right. The defection rate was staggering. The Golden Koi was bleeding manpower, and the Black Lotus was tightening the noose.
"I will not surrender my husband’s legacy to a pack of scavengers," Li said, her voice dropping to a lethal, icy register. "Tell your masters in the Black Lotus that the Golden Koi is not for sale. If they want the Outer Harbour, they will have to bleed for it."
Wei sighed, shaking his head in mock disappointment. He stood up, buttoning his white suit jacket.
"A tragic miscalculation," Wei murmured. He looked around the opulent VIP room, his eyes lingering on the antique silk screens. "This room will make a beautiful office for our new regional director. Enjoy your final days, Madam Bai."
He turned to leave, flanked by two massive bodyguards who had been standing silently by the door.
As Wei walked past me, he paused, looking me up and down with a sneer of absolute contempt.
"And you," Wei said, his eyes locking onto mine. "The new ghost. I heard about what you did to my men in the street. Enjoy the suit while it lasts, Gwailo. When we take this building, I’m going to have you skinned alive and hung from the neon sign out front."
He took a step toward the door.
I didn’t think. I reacted.
I stepped smoothly into his path, blocking the exit. The movement was so fast, so fluid, that Wei’s bodyguards didn’t even have time to reach for their weapons.
I didn’t draw my gun. I simply looked down at Wei, letting the *Emperor’s Presence* bleed through the cracks of my Noah Reed persona. Just a fraction. Just enough to let the monster out of the cage for a single, terrifying second.
The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. The ambient noise of the parlor below vanished, replaced by a suffocating, crushing pressure.
Wei froze, the arrogant sneer melting off his face instantly. His eyes widened, the pupils dilating in primal, instinctual terror. He wasn’t looking at a bodyguard anymore. He was looking at an apex predator, a man who had broken empires far larger and far deadlier than the Black Lotus.
"You are a messenger, Wei," I whispered, my voice a low, vibrating rumble that seemed to echo in his bones. "Deliver your message. But if you ever threaten me, or the Matriarch, in this building again... I won’t skin you. I will break every bone in your body, heal you, and do it again until your mind shatters. Do you understand me?"
Wei couldn’t speak. He was physically paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming aura of dominance radiating from me. He swallowed hard, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple, and gave a jerky, terrified nod.
I stepped aside, the crushing pressure vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. I slipped back into the posture of the silent, obedient shadow.
Wei stumbled backward, nearly tripping over his own feet, and practically ran out of the VIP room, his bodyguards hurrying after him in confused panic.
