Chapter 203: The Setup

[Jake’s POV]

The rain started just after midnight, a torrential, punishing downpour that lashed against the reinforced glass of Li’s penthouse windows. The storm washed away the smog and the oppressive heat, leaving the city of Macau looking like a glittering, fractured mirror in the darkness.

Inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was charged with a different kind of electricity.

I stood over a massive, black marble dining table that we had cleared and repurposed as a tactical command center. Spread across the polished surface were blueprints of the Inner Harbour, shipping manifests, and a dozen burner phones. I had spent the last four hours systematically dismantling the Golden Koi’s outdated security protocols and rebuilding them from the ground up.

Li sat on a low leather sofa a few feet away, her legs crossed, a glass of amber liquor resting loosely in her hand. She had changed out of her severe business suit and into a dark crimson silk robe that clung to her curves. She hadn’t spoken in an hour. She was simply watching me work.

"The Black Lotus is operating on an outdated territorial model," I said, my voice breaking the silence. I didn’t look up from the map. I was using a red marker to circle three specific warehouses along the waterfront. "Wei thinks he can bleed you out by intimidating your street-level vendors and buying off your lieutenants. It’s a slow, cowardly strategy. It relies on the assumption that you won’t strike back."

Li took a slow sip from her glass. "I haven’t struck back because I don’t have the manpower, Noah. Gao took a third of my enforcers with him when he was exiled. The men who remain are loyal, but they are outnumbered three to one."

"Manpower is irrelevant if you control the board," I countered, finally looking up to meet her gaze. "Wei is arrogant. He thinks he’s already won. That arrogance makes him sloppy. He’s consolidated the Black Lotus’s illicit cash flow into these three warehouses, using Chen’s logistics network to move the money offshore."

I tapped the red circles on the map.

"If we hit his soldiers in the street, it’s a gang war. We lose a war of attrition," I explained, letting the cold, analytical precision of the Vanguard King bleed into my voice. "But if we hit his money... if we burn his cash reserves and destroy his laundering infrastructure in a single night... Wei loses his backing. The Four Dragons don’t tolerate failure, and they certainly don’t tolerate financial incompetence. They’ll cut him loose."

Li stood up, the silk of her robe whispering against her skin. She walked slowly toward the table, her dark eyes scanning the blueprints.

"A coordinated strike on three heavily guarded Black Lotus warehouses," she murmured, her voice laced with a mixture of skepticism and awe. "Noah, even if I committed every single soldier I have left, it would be a suicide mission. The security at those locations is military-grade."

"I’m not sending your soldiers," I said flatly. "I’m sending Ethan. And I’m going myself."

Li’s head snapped up, her eyes widening in genuine shock. "Just the two of you? That is madness. You are my Head of Security now. I cannot risk losing you on a suicide run."

"It’s not a suicide run, Li. It’s a surgical strike," I said, stepping around the table to close the distance between us. "Your soldiers are brawlers. They make noise. They leave a footprint. Ethan and I are ghosts. We don’t need to fight an army. We just need to bypass the alarms, plant the incendiaries, and walk away before the smoke clears."

I didn’t mention that I had already contacted Claire and Nia. Vanguard’s cyber-warfare division was currently slicing through the Black Lotus’s private security networks. When Ethan and I walked into those warehouses, the cameras would be looping dead footage, and the electronic locks would be wide open.

But Li didn’t need to know about Vanguard. She just needed to believe in Noah Reed.

"You are asking me to bet the entire survival of the Golden Koi on you," she whispered, looking up into my eyes. The proximity was intoxicating. I could feel the heat radiating from her body, smell the sharp tang of the liquor on her breath mixed with the heavy, floral scent of her jasmine perfume.

"I’m asking you to let me do what you hired me to do," I replied, my voice dropping to a low, vibrating rumble. "You hired a monster to protect you from the dark, Li. Let me off the leash."

She stared at me, her chest rising and falling with shallow, rapid breaths. The ruthless, calculating Matriarch was completely gone. In her place was a woman who was desperately, overwhelmingly drawn to the sheer, unyielding power I projected. She had spent her entire life surrounded by men who wanted to take from her. Now, she was standing in front of a man who only wanted to destroy her enemies.

The mechanical hum vibrated at the base of my skull, a relentless, driving rhythm.

**[Ding! Target(Milf) Madam Bai’s Trust Level: Maximum.]**

**[Status: Absolute Submission Pending.]**

**[Notice: The Target has surrendered her strategic authority to you. The Conquest Phase is imminent.]**

Li reached out, her trembling fingers resting lightly against the lapel of my tailored suit.

"If you die tonight, Noah," she whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion, "I will have nothing left."

"I’m not going to die," I promised, my hand coming up to gently cup her cheek. Her skin was incredibly soft, a stark contrast to the violent, bloody world she ruled. "I’m going to burn Wei’s empire to the ground, and then I’m going to come back to you."

She leaned into my touch, her eyes fluttering shut for a brief, vulnerable second. When she opened them again, the fear was gone, replaced by a dark, consuming hunger.

"Do it," she commanded, her voice breathless. "Burn it all."

I stepped back, breaking the physical contact before the tension could snap completely. The Conquest had to wait. The System demanded victory first.

I turned back to the table, grabbing a heavy black duffel bag I had packed earlier. It was filled with thermite charges, suppressed tactical sidearms, and encrypted comms gear.

"Ethan is waiting in the alley," I said, slinging the bag over my shoulder. "Lock the penthouse down. Do not open this door for anyone but me."

"Noah," she called out as I reached the heavy steel security door.

I paused, looking back over my shoulder. She was standing by the marble table, the crimson silk of her robe glowing in the dim light, looking like a dark, beautiful goddess of war.

"Come back to me," she whispered.
