Chapter 205: The passing storm

[Jake’s POV]

The storm blew itself out just before dawn, leaving the city of Macau washed clean. The heavy rain had scrubbed the smog from the air, and the early morning light filtering through the penthouse windows was a pale, bruised gray.

I lay awake, staring at the ceiling. Li was asleep beside me, her breathing slow and even, her arm draped heavily across my chest. The tension that usually radiated from her in waves was gone.

I carefully slid out from under her arm, making sure not to wake her. I picked up my discarded trousers from the floor, pulled them on, and walked into the master bathroom. I turned the shower on, letting the water hit the tiles to create a layer of white noise, then pulled the encrypted burner phone from my jacket pocket and tapped the earpiece sitting on the counter.

"Overwatch, sitrep," I murmured, keeping my voice low.

"Reading you, Noah," Claire’s voice came through, crisp and professional. She was using the alias, maintaining operational security even on the encrypted line. "The fires at Warehouse Alpha and Bravo burned for three hours before the local fire brigades could get them under control. Thermite did its job. The structures are gutted. Wei’s financial reserves are completely vaporized."

"What’s the chatter on the street?" I asked.

"Chaotic," Nia chimed in, her fingers clacking rapidly across a keyboard in the background. "I’m monitoring the local police bands and the unencrypted triad frequencies. The Black Lotus is in full panic mode. Wei hasn’t been seen since the explosions. Rumor is he’s trying to secure a boat to Hong Kong, but the Four Dragons have already put a bounty on his head."

I leaned against the marble counter, processing the information. The new System skill I had unlocked last night—Triad Network—was already feeding me a subtle, intuitive understanding of the local hierarchy. I could almost feel the vacuum forming in the Outer Harbour.

"Keep monitoring the ports," I said. "If Wei tries to run, I want to know about it. But our priority right now is the territory he left behind. The Black Lotus street dealers and dock workers are waking up to realize their boss is gone and their paychecks are ash."

"You want to absorb them," Claire noted.

"We have to," I replied. "If we don’t fill the vacuum, another faction from the Four Dragons will step in. I need you to map out the primary Black Lotus collection routes in the Outer Harbour. Send the coordinates to Ethan’s phone."

"Copy that. Sending them now. Stay sharp, Noah. The Four Dragons aren’t going to ignore a hit this big."

"I know. Reed out."

I tapped the earpiece off and stepped back into the bedroom. Li was sitting up against the headboard, the silk sheets pulled up to her chest. She looked at me, her dark eyes heavy with sleep but sharp with intelligence.

"Who were you talking to?" she asked softly.

"My brother," I lied smoothly, walking over to the bed. "I told him to get down to the counting room and wait for us. The streets are going to be a mess today."

Li sighed, running a hand through her tangled hair. The reality of the morning was settling in. "The Four Dragons will call a summit soon. They will demand answers for the fires."

"Let them demand," I said, sitting on the edge of the mattress. "Wei was a rogue lieutenant who couldn’t protect his own assets. That’s the narrative we push. But before the summons comes, we need to secure the Outer Harbour. We need to make sure that when you walk into that meeting, you own the streets."

She looked at me, the vulnerability from last night replaced by the calculating gaze of the Matriarch. "You want to take Wei’s territory."

"His men aren’t getting paid today," I pointed out. "They’re scared. We offer them stability. We offer them a place in the Golden Koi."
