Chapter 218: The Descent

[Jake’s POV]

The drive back down the Coloane hills was cloaked in heavy silence.

Inside the Maybach, the only sounds were the tires on wet asphalt and the low hum of the engine. The partition was still up. The air smelled like leather, cold metal, and the faint trace of incense that had clung to Li’s suit.

The windows were fogged at the edges. Outside, the mountain bled into the city. Mist clung to the bamboo, then broke apart under the headlights.

Li sat in the corner. Her head rested against the tinted glass. She watched the ancient bamboo forests give way to neon. The adrenaline was gone now. What was left was bone-deep exhaustion. Her face looked pale in the dim light.

Her knuckles were still white. The adrenaline crash left her brittle. Every few seconds her jaw would tighten, then release.

I sat beside her, eyes on the dark road ahead. My hands rested on my knees. In my head, the summit replayed on a loop.

Empress Song Mei had accepted the ledgers too easily. She hadn’t questioned the sudden capital. She hadn’t asked how two warehouses burned with military precision in a single night.

She knew.

Maybe not who I was. Maybe not how. But she knew Li Bai wasn’t the architect. The Empress had looked at me and seen a variable she couldn’t quantify. She let the Golden Koi keep the territory because order was more valuable than pride. But she was watching us now.

The mountain behind us felt like an eye. Even with the partition up, I felt exposed. Somewhere above, the Imperial compound was still awake.

The static in my earpiece finally cleared as we passed the lower boundary of the mountain’s shielding. The sound came back wet and sharp. Claire’s voice had relief under it. Nia was already running traffic cams ahead of us.

"Overwatch, we are clear of the dead zone," I murmured.

"Copy that, Noah," Claire’s voice came through. There was relief under the professionalism. "Telemetry shows you’re on the main highway heading back to the Outer Harbour. How did the summit go?"

"We hold the territory," I replied quietly. "The ledgers held up. The other bosses backed down."

"And the Empress?" Nia asked.

"She’s exactly what the profile suggested," I said. Outside, the headlights of an oncoming truck swept across the windows, then were gone. "She’s a predator. She accepted the new borders, but she increased Li’s revenue quotas by thirty percent. She’s going to squeeze the Golden Koi to see if we break."

"Can the Outer Harbour generate that kind of cash?" Claire asked.

"It will have to," I said. "Reed out."

I tapped the earpiece off. The silence came back.

Li turned her head. In the dim light, her eyes looked tired but sharp.

"You think she suspects something," Li said. Her voice was barely a whisper.

"I think she’s the smartest person in Macau," I replied. "She didn’t survive this long by taking things at face value. She knows the Golden Koi didn’t pull off a synchronized thermite strike and a hostile takeover without outside help."

"If she suspects you, she will send the Imperial Shadows to investigate," Li warned. A flicker of fear returned to her eyes. "They are her personal intelligence network. They don’t operate like street thugs. They are ghosts. You never see them coming. No chatter. No mistakes. They leave a room colder than they found it. If the Empress sends them, we won’t get a warning. We’ll just stop existing on paper."

"Let them investigate," I said. My voice was steady. "My legend is solid. As long as we keep the streets quiet and meet her new quotas, she won’t have a reason to move against us directly."

The Maybach turned into the alley behind the mahjong parlor twenty minutes later.

The heavy steel door was already open. Ethan stood in the doorway. Rifle lowered but ready. His eyes scanned the street behind us before he shut the door and locked it. The sound of the bolt sliding home was final.

We stepped inside. The parlor smelled stale. Old tea. Gun oil. Sweat dried into the floorboards. The fluorescent lights hummed and flickered once.

Ethan’s guys were quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that meant they were listening for trouble on the roof and in the alley.

"Status?" I asked, shrugging off my suit jacket as we walked into the counting room. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.

"Quiet," Ethan reported, following us in. "No movement from the other factions. The new recruits from the docks are holding the perimeter. We had a few drunk tourists wander down the wrong alley, but my guys turned them around without any noise."

"Good," I said.

I looked at Li. She was leaning against the steel table, rubbing her temples with both hands.

"The Empress increased our quotas," Li told Ethan. Her voice was exhausted. "We need to generate thirty percent more revenue by the end of the month."
