[Jake’s POV]
The corridor was dead silent.
My ears rang faintly. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, a low, constant sound. I stood up, adjusting my suit jacket, and looked at the reinforced steel transit cart. It was locked with a heavy digital keypad, but I didn’t need to open it. The cart itself wasn’t the objective.
The metal gleamed under the lights. Cold. The air tasted like dust and recycled AC. Somewhere down the hall, a vent rattled.
Resting on top of the cart was a smaller, locked Pelican case. Black. Scuffed at the corners. It was the VIP drop box, used for the highest-denomination chips and cash from the private rooms.
I picked up the Pelican case. It was heavy, likely holding over a million dollars in untraceable currency. The handle bit into my palm. It had weight, real weight. My knuckles whitened. The plastic clasps were cool and smooth against my fingers.
I pulled a cheap, prepaid burner phone from my pocket. Plastic. It smelled faintly of packaging and dust. I placed it squarely on the center of the transit cart, right where the Pelican case had been.
"Overwatch, I have the package," I murmured, turning back toward the stairwell. "What’s Ethan’s status?"
"He’s playing it perfectly," Claire replied. Her voice was steady, but I could hear relief under it. "He let the Aegis guards tackle him. Floor security is currently escorting him out the back service doors. He didn’t throw any lethal strikes, so they’re just treating him as a drunk, belligerent high-roller. They’re tossing him into the alley."
"Tell him to head back to the Golden Koi," I said, moving quickly down the stairs. "I’m extracting now."
The stairs echoed. My breath was the only sound. Each step was soft. The concrete smelled like dust and old paint.
I retraced my steps through the service corridors, bypassing the cameras using Nia’s frozen loops, and slipped out a side exit that led to the loading docks. The humid night air hit me as I stepped out into the shadows.
It smelled like exhaust and wet cardboard and grease. A generator hummed somewhere. The pavement was slick.Neon from the Strip bled across puddles, painting the ground in broken red and gold.
I walked two blocks down the street, blending in with the late-night tourist traffic, before hailing a cab. The cab smelled like cigarettes and cheap air freshener. The driver didn’t speak. The radio played low static and a pop song I didn’t know.
Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the back office of the Golden Koi. The room was dark wood and low light. A single desk lamp threw a warm circle on the mahogany. Li was sitting behind her desk, reviewing the day’s collection logs. The pages rustled. She looked up as I walked in and set the heavy Pelican case on the desk.
The case landed with a solid thud. Dust lifted in the lamplight.
"What is that?" she asked, her brow furrowing.
"That is leverage," I said, taking a seat in the leather chair opposite her. The leather sighed under my weight.
