Chapter 224: The First Drop

[Jake’s POV]

The counting room in the basement of the Jade Palace was a sterile, brightly lit bunker. No windows. The walls were white tile and the floor was polished concrete that reflected the overhead LEDs like ice. It lacked the heavy, humid atmosphere of the Golden Koi’s back rooms. No smell of sweat or cheap tobacco. Here it was ozone and cold metal, and the relentless hum of high-end currency counters that never stopped.

The air was too cold. The AC vent above rattled softly. Cold air poured down and raised goosebumps along my arms. It smelled like dust and electronics. My breath felt thin. The tile walls echoed every sound back at us, making the room feel smaller than it was.

I stood near the reinforced steel door, arms crossed. The door was thick and painted gray, with a keypad that beeped softly every time someone pressed it. Watching as Ethan unzipped the third canvas duffel bag of the morning.

The zipper sounded loud. Teeth separating. It echoed off the tile.

Vivian Chau stood on the opposite side of the stainless steel table, flanked by two of her senior floor managers. Her heels clicked once when she shifted her weight. She maintained her crisp, corporate posture, shoulders back, chin level. But her eyes widened slightly as Ethan dumped the contents of the bag onto the table.

Stacks of Macau Patacas, Hong Kong Dollars, and Chinese Yuan spilled across the metal surface. The bills were stiff. Some were damp at the edges. The smell of them was immediate — ink, sweat, and street markets. Rubber bands snapped as the managers separated them. The counting machines started with a high-pitched whine, then settled into a steady, rapid flutter. Like a deck of cards being shuffled a thousand times a minute. The sound was soft but constant. Paper hitting steel. Bundles thumping down. The smell of old bills rose immediately. Ink, dust, and hands. Money that had moved through markets, taxis, back alleys.

"This is the morning collection from the Outer Harbour transit yards," Ethan said, his voice strictly professional. He had adapted to the corporate environment quickly, trading his frayed hoodie for a clean, dark button-down shirt. The sleeves were rolled once.

"It’s roughly four million in mixed currency. We need it processed, logged as VIP baccarat losses, and wired to the Golden Koi’s primary holding accounts by three p.m."

Vivian picked up a stack of bills, inspecting the rubber bands. The band snapped faintly against the paper. "This is a massive volume of street-level cash, Mr. Reed. My machines can process it, but integrating this much physical currency into the daily drop without triggering an automated audit from the gaming commission will require careful structuring."

The counters whirred to life as one of her managers fed the first stack in. The vibration traveled up through the stainless steel table into my palms. Numbers flickered on the digital displays, red and blurry. One of the managers wiped sweat from his forehead even though the room was freezing. The smell of ozone got stronger the longer the machines ran. A rapid flicker. Like cards being shuffled at impossible speed. The sound filled the room and vibrated through the table into my palms.

"That’s why we’re paying you five percent, Ms. Chau," I said, stepping forward. My shoes made no sound on the concrete. "Structure it. Break it down across multiple high-roller accounts. Use the dummy profiles my team provided to your servers this morning."

Vivian looked at me, her expression tight. The light caught the edge of her white pantsuit and made it glow. "The profiles your team injected into my secure mainframe. My IT director nearly had a heart attack when twelve new VIP accounts materialized in our database with flawless, backdated transaction histories."
