Chapter 108
“My offer had a time limit, you know. Only 30…29…28…”
Hearing him count down, everyone began to panic.
Thirty seconds to decide? That was barely enough!
They wanted to eat. They were starving. And there was meat!
Finally, someone couldn’t resist any longer. He knelt first, bowing to Ray, then whispered a quick “sorry” to Bruce before shouting loudly, “Idiot!”
With that, he boldly stepped toward Ray.
Since Ray was still inside the passage, no poisonous water could fall while he was there.
Even if it killed him, he would rather die full than die hungry.
“Can I eat now?” the man asked.
Ray gestured politely. “No chairs. Just squat and make do.”
The man didn’t hesitate. He began eating immediately.
He dipped a slice of lamb, swirled it in the sauce, and took a bite. The flavor was so exquisite that his brows relaxed, and tears nearly sprang to his eyes. He had never imagined he would taste hot pot in this lifetime.
Seeing him devour the food, the others couldn’t hold back any longer.
Once someone had taken the lead, why hesitate?
“Sorry, Bruce!”
“Excuse me, Bruce.”
One by one, they greeted Bruce first, then shouted “idiot!” at him, bowed to Ray, and hurried over. Soon, they were all gathered around the stove, digging in.
It was pure bliss.
In such freezing weather, sitting around a stove with hot pot bubbling before them, each bite of steaming meat or vegetables warmed them to their core.
They felt so comfortable and happy.
If Ray had wanted to recruit them at that moment, almost all of them would have agreed immediately. Out of ten people, nine would say yes without hesitation, and the last one would at most pause for three minutes before agreeing.
But right now, nothing mattered more than the food.
And what good food it was–hot, meaty, and fresh vegetables too. Who wouldn’t love it?
Of course, Ray had no such intentions.
Even Bruce was drooling with desire, but he knew that begging would get him nowhere. Ray wouldn’t give in. So he clenched the last scraps of his dignity and stayed silent.
“Daddy, I’m hungry!”
A child’s voice suddenly broke the scene. The cold had woken him.
