When Ray returned to the first floor, Leo came trotting over, tail wagging.
Ray smiled. When it came to loyalty, only Leo truly qualified.
As for Honey and the others? They followed him and obeyed him only because he could provide such excellent conditions. If he were penniless, just look at how quickly their attitudes would change.
But Ray believed this without a doubt–Leo would never leave him.
Those who are willing to endure poverty with you are the ones truly worth cherishing.
Another night passed. The apocalypse entered Day 19.
Before dawn, Building 4 erupted into chaos.
The fire doors leading to the first floor wouldn’t open.
At first, no one thought much of it. The weather was bitterly cold, and there was probably some moisture on the door that had frozen over. A good hard shove–one solid hit–should knock it open.
But one person tried. Then another. None of them could get it to budge. Soon, the entire building was alarmed.
Several burly men took turns slamming themselves into the fire door, but it was like an ant trying to shake a tree–completely
useless.
“Move aside!” Jon came over carrying a fire axe and swung it at the door.
Wood chips flew everywhere.
After hacking at it for a while, Jon grew exhausted and handed the axe to someone else to continue.
After about an hour of effort, they finally managed to break the fire door open.
They thought the problem was solved.
Then they saw the thick wall of ice behind it–and froze in place.
What the hell?
Why was there an ice wall in the second–floor corridor?
And faintly, they could make out rows of vertical shapes inside.
Steel bars? What the hell? Everything had been fine during the day yesterday!
Who sealed off the corridor in the middle of the night?
Did the entire residential complex work together?
Otherwise, there was no way one person–or even a few–could have completed something like this!
And they hadn’t even seen the cars behind the ice wall yet. If they had, their scalps would have gone numb, as if trapped in a nightmare.
How were cars even hauled up here?
Even the craziest female driver couldn’t pull off something like that.
“Let’s try the elevator shaft!” someone suddenly suggested.

Everyone rushed to the elevator shaft and pried the doors open. When they shined a flashlight inside, they all went dumbstruck.
That path was sealed too–blocked by thick layers of ice down to the first floor.
What now? They were trapped inside the building.
“Why don’t we climb out the windows?” another genius proposed.
Eyes lit up immediately.
From the second floor to the ground was only about three meters. Even jumping straight down wouldn’t be fatal. They could tie ropes, or throw bedding down first to cushion the fall.
But the problem was-
Poisonous hail was still falling outside.
And adults might manage, but what about the elderly? What about children?
