Lauren looked down at Ray, her tone dripping with mockery.

“Ray, where did you get the nerve to judge me? Who’s she–your new lover?”

“Ms. Gantt, is it?” Lucy’s voice turned crisp, professional. “Just for saying that, I could sue you for defamation. But I won’t stoop to your level. Still, if you ever make another baseless accusation like that, I won’t let it go so easily.”

Ray chuckled. “This is Lucy Fraser, my legal representative.”

Lauren froze.

Wait–wasn’t his lawyer supposed to be Chuck? The famous one, not this soft–spoken, beautiful woman.

And her body–God, that chest couldn’t be real, could it? And that curve–too perfect. Must be surgery, Lauren thought bitterly.

Still, there was no denying Lucy carried herself with sharp confidence, the air of someone used to being in control. A real lawyer, then. Probably from Chuck’s firm.

It made sense–Chuck was the top divorce lawyer in Senna City, so assigning a junior associate to handle follow- ups was normal.

Lauren cursed herself for not realizing it sooner. Embarrassment prickled her skin–she wanted to vanish into the floor.

But no–something didn’t add up. Why would Ray bring his lawyer here, of all places? Why this restaurant, right next to them?

The reason was obvious. He wanted her to see. He wanted to make her jealous.

“Ray,” she said coldly, “you can show off all you want today. Tomorrow, I’ll have my lawyer petition the court to freeze your assets. Let’s see you act so smug then. Can’t have you spending marital funds reckless-

She said it with practiced authority, the exact phrasing fed to her by her lawyer and Zac.

She wanted to see if Ray could remain so arrogant when his accounts were frozen.

Ray laughed under his breath. “Sure. Go ahead. Try freezing my assets tomorrow–let’s see if you can pull it off. You think the courts move on your command?”

“Just wait and see!” Lauren snapped, storming back to her table.

Dinner forgotten, she was practically shaking with fury–too full of anger to eat another bite.

Ray couldn’t help but laugh, though his eyes, when they lifted to the Gantt family, were cold as glass.

Lucy noticed that look and something in her softened.

So that’s what this was. He must’ve suffered deeply in that house. Otherwise, why go to such lengths to torment them now?

He didn’t even want compensation; he was donating it all. He just wanted the Gantts to suffer–to lose money, to lose peace. That was enough for him.

She smiled faintly, then slid her chair a little closer to him.

‘Smart woman,‘ Ray thought. He caught her cue and leaned in as well.

The two of them sat close, speaking in low tones that meant nothing–small, irrelevant talk–but to anyone watching, they looked intimate.

Sure enough, Lauren caught sight of them from across the room and nearly came unglued.

Lawyer and client? Really? Did they have to sit that close?

“Dad, Mom,” she muttered, her voice trembling with anger. “You eat. I’m leaving.”

She grabbed her bag and stormed off.
