The last two days, Mallory Avenue had been unbearable with gossip.

First, the Gantts rushed out, boasting they might be able to get 20 million from Ray. Then word flipped: the million was apparently post–divorce money; Ray had no obligation to split the money at all.

And the Gantts, who had been strutting like kings through the neighborhood, had all retreated into their shells. No one had come forward to contradict the new story. People assumed the latest rumor must be true.

“Heh, looks like heaven’s got its eye on things after all.”

“Right–no money going to the Gantts!”

“Serves them right. First, Lauren’s scandal, now thinking they’ll get 20 million for nothing. What a joke.”

“If I were them, I’d be having nightmares for months.”

“Ten years, at least.”

“Ten years? 20 million? That’s a lifetime shadow.”

“Good. They deserve it.”

Meanwhile, the Gantts themselves were a picture of defeat–four people hunched in their rooms, each sunk deep in sullen misery, as if the sky itself had fallen. There was no energy left in them. The thought of 20 million slipping away felt like the end of the world.

“Grandma, I’m hungry!” Michael suddenly screamed.

“Always hungry,” Josh grumbled, snapping, “Who’s the kid’s dad? Just send the kid back to his dad and let him feed the kid. I want him out of my house!”

“Dad, what are you saying?” Lauren leapt up.

Josh scowled. “If you hadn’t done those shameful things, Ray would still be our son–in–law. We wouldn’t be divorced, and that 40 million would belong to us. Now? We don’t get a single cent!”

As if that weren’t bad enough, Ray was suing to re–divide marital assets and demanding compe. emotional suffering. The Gantts could be looking at a very different kind of bill. Lauren hadn’t mentioned that part yet–if she did, her father might truly lose it.

Lauren stared at her father. “All of Ray’s past earnings were turned over to me. How much did I give Max? Don’t you remember?”

Lauren couldn’t help thinking, ‘How dare they turn their anger on Michael? Unbelievable!‘

“Dad’s right!” Max chimed in, eager to tag along. “If you’d never divorced, we’d have 40 million!”

‘You’re so eager to call him brother–in–law now, huh!‘ Lauren thought, furious. She felt blood rise to her head.

After using Ray like livestock for years, now they blamed her? She felt like she might vomit.

Max, still grasping for easy fixes, offered, “Lauren, can’t you remarry him? Michael isn’t his biologically, but he’s called him dad for three years. Surely there’s some feeling there?”

“Yeah!” Josh and Daisy both clapped in sudden agreement, eyes greedy and bright.

Three years of “dad” surely there had to be some bond. Besides, Lauren and Ray had been together for years.
