Chapter 46
“What a vile woman!”
Lauren instantly realized her mistake. Her face went pale, and she whirled around and fled.
She shoved her way through the crowd and sprinted toward her apartment building.
Seeing her run, people redirected their anger toward Josh and his wife.
What kind of parents raise a daughter like that?
Josh and his wife, though usually shameless and bold, didn’t dare talk back under the collective scorn of the crowd. They could only slink away in disgrace.
More importantly, they needed to get home and check their daughter’s bank statements.
Just how much money did she really have left?
Ray continued his walk with the dog, only heading back when Leo was so exhausted he refused to take another step.
This was only the first day. No one had truly grasped the horror of this disaster yet. But the hail kept falling, and no rescue teams had appeared. Panic would start spreading soon enough.
Back home, Ray went to a second–floor bedroom. Peering out the window, he saw the ground was already buried under a thick layer of ice, littered with hailstones. The fog was growing denser by the minute.
How could anyone possibly drive in these conditions?
It wasn’t that the government hadn’t tried to send troops with relief supplies. But multiple transport trucks had crashed, some even exploding. Soldiers had died. Naturally, the entire operation had to be scaled back and slowed down. After all, soldiers‘ lives were valuable too.
If it were just a matter of enduring hardship, the troops would push through no matter what. But this situation was simply insurmountable. Sending them to die for nothing was out of the question.
With the thick fog, visibility was barely over three feet. Even that might be manageable for transporting supplies by manpower alone. But add this toxic hail into the mix… rescue operations became impossible.
Ray stopped pondering these thoughts. He went to work out again.
He exercised, and Leo mimicked him, stretching his canine limbs right beside him.
After his workout, he checked his phone. There were messages from Lucy and Keisha. First, they complained about the weather, then they told him to be careful. Where there are natural disasters, man–made chaos is sure to follow.
The critical question now was: in weather like this, could the police even respond?
If these conditions lasted a few more days…
The thought was terrifying.

Ray told them to be careful too, especially to keep their doors and windows securely locked, and not let anyone shady break in.
Keisha agreed repeatedly.
Lucy said her best friend’s doomsday bunker was incredibly solid. The hail couldn’t even crack the glass. Inside, they had a generator, plenty of diesel fuel, and enough food and water to last for months. They were perfectly
fine.
Ray put his phone down, took another shower, and went to bed.
All night long, the sound of hail pounding echoed, making it hard to sleep. But Ray had prepared earplugs, and now that the disaster had finally arrived, his anxiety and uncertainty were gone. He fell asleep quickly.
The night passed.
Ray looked at the pale, murky whiteness outside his window, then checked the time.
It was already 7:30 a.m.
By this hour, the sky should have been bright. Why did it look like this?
