Chapter 57
With Mr. Marshall shut down so hard, the other elders weren’t having it.
“Listen here, young man! A little money doesn’t make you better than anyone. Show some respect to your elders!”
“You think you know everything? We’ve been around the block a few more times than you have! Do yourself a favor–apologize to Mr. Marshall and cooperate. Don’t make things harder on yourself.”
The circle of seniors tightened around Ray, their voices rising in a chorus of disapproval.
Ray locked eyes with one particularly vocal woman. “Let’s get this straight,” he said, his tone flat. “You talk about ‘being around the block‘? I’m twenty–seven. You’re what, seventy? If life experience were measured in miles, sure, you’ve got more. But that doesn’t make you right. It just means you’re older and wrong.”
The woman sputtered, caught off guard. This young man was impossible!
“And the rest of you—”
Ray dismantled their arguments one by one with cold, simple logic, leaving the group flustered and fuming, too angry to form a coherent retort.
‘Out of steam?‘ A faint, dismissive smirk touched Ray’s lips. He gave Leo’s leash a gentle tug and strode away.
Leo, who had been waiting with dwindling patience, practically shot forward. ‘Finally! Wasn’t this supposed to be a walk, not a town hall meeting?‘
After Leo had burned off his energy, even Ray felt the exertion–but he chalked it up to a good cardio session.
Back home, he cleaned up and started thinking about dinner.
Out of habit, he checked his phone.
Ugh. Another wave of friend requests.
He was about to swipe them away when a familiar profile picture made him pause.
Honey!
A slow smile spread across his face. So she finally broke.
He didn’t play coy. He tapped “Accept” immediately.
He could afford to be direct.
But after accepting, he said nothing. He simply waited.
‘Heh. If you’re gonna ask for something, you should speak up first.‘
Half an hour passed before Honey finally sent a message: [Can you give me some food and water?]
Ray left her on read for another half hour before replying: [Yes, but…]
She replied instantly: [I can sleep you… but you have to agree to my conditions!]

Fine. If she wanted to start with a sky–high price, he would bargain from the ground up.
Ray replied just as quickly: [Come over. We’ll talk face–to–face.]
Honey: [I’ll find a chance.]
Ray smiled, set his phone aside, and Leo tilted its head at him, eyes full of question marks.
“Time to improve our meals. We’re having seafood,” Ray explained.
Leo looked even more confused–pure dog–face bewilderment.
Ray ate his meal. Today, he chose barbecue and deliberately took out three lamb skewers. Leo, of course, ate well right along with him. In a doomsday like this, Leo was eating better than 99% of people. Plenty of people were starving.
After a while, Honey’s message arrived.
Honey: [I’m here.]
Ray smiled and said to Leo, “Be good and wait here. I’ll be right back.”
Leo stuck out its tongue, lay down on the floor, and lazily wagged its tail twice.
Every time its owner went alone to the basement, he stayed down there for a long time. It could take a nap first.
Ray went to the basement and first checked the surveillance.
Even though his combat power was already off the charts, caution had become instinct.
Ray opened the door, and Honey slipped inside.
Huh–those clothes looked awfully familiar. Weren’t they what Amanda used to wear?
He understood immediately. These must be Honey’s clothes.
Amanda had come to Senna City at the end of May. She wouldn’t have brought winter clothes. So naturally, she could only be wearing Honey’s.
Apparently, this winter coat was the warmest one. Amanda had picked it, and now Honey had picked it too. Thinking about it was actually kind of funny.
Ray closed the door.
For a moment, the atmosphere was awkward.
Ray wasn’t in a hurry at all. The one starving and dying of thirst wasn’t him.
Honey bit her lip and said, “I want a hundred pounds of rice and one case of water. And you have to help me carry it to the sixteenth floor.”
She’d carry the last floor by herself.
Sure enough, she was opening with a ridiculous price.

Ray raised one finger. “I’ll let you eat your fill here and drink as much water as you want. When you leave, I can also give you one pack of instant noodles and one bottle of water.”
Honey refused. “Then I’m leaving.”
She moved to open the door. Ray made no move to stop her.
Honey bit her lip hard, stopped, and turned back. “Fifty pounds of rice and half a case of water.”
She cut it straight in half.
Ray shook his head and said casually, “Depends on your performance. When you leave, I can give you a few more packs of noodles and water. If you don’t agree, leave.”
Honey pressed her red lips together, standing perfectly still, as if she’d been frozen in place.
Just when Ray thought she’d turned into a statue, Honey finally squeezed out a single word, “Okay.”
