Chapter 84

Thomas and his men split up, one group in the open and one in the shadows, both heading toward Ray’s villa.
The underground team was sure to arrive first. They switched on two flashlights and began examining the iron
door.
They knocked on it. A dull, humming thud answered.
“Damn,” someone exclaimed. “This guy really spared no expense. He actually reinforced the basement entrance this heavily! Just listen to that sound–this door must be insanely thick.”
Another person laughed. “Anyone would think he predicted the apocalypse ahead of time!”
Thomas snorted. “He’s probably watched too many zombie movies. A thick door like this is meant to keep zombies out. Now, it’s just toxic hail and freezing weather what’s a thicker door going to do? Still, if he really got brainwashed by doomsday films, then the supplies he’s stockpiled are probably way beyond what we’re imagining.”
“Exactly!” Several pairs of eyes lit up at once.
That meant their haul tonight would exceed expectations.
“Quick–start the feint attack!”
They took metal tools and scraped them against the iron door, producing a screech, deliberately imitating the sound of welding.
Ray smiled faintly and tapped his phone.
Suddenly-
Every fire sprinkler in the entire passageway burst to life, spraying water in all directions.
In truth, Noel would never have agreed to tamper with the complex’s official fire system. If that were discovered, he’d be facing criminal charges. So Ray had simply had an additional system installed. That, at least, was perfectly legitimate.
And what water source had Ray connected this sprinkler system to?
Naturally, it was melted toxic hail–diluted, but toxic all the same.
“Ah-!”
Instantly, screams filled the corridor.
“It’s poisonous water!”
“Damn it, that bastard is vicious!”
“Run! Run!”
Thomas and the others scrambled and tumbled over one another as they fled toward the exit.
After great difficulty, they finally escaped the corridor and out of the sprinkler’s range. One by one, they collapsed to the ground, shocked and terrified.
Ray had even modified the fire sprinkler system!
“Damn the property managemen

“Damn the housing authority!”
“Damn the fire department!”
How could something this blatantly illegal go unchecked?
They never realized that Ray hadn’t modified the fire system at all. He’d simply added another one.
But did that distinction really matter?
“What do we do now?” They stared at one another in dismay. Their role had been to draw Ray’s attention from below so the surface team could storm the villa. Instead, they’d turned into a complete liability.
Had they distracted him even a little? Almost not at all.
Thomas felt stunned. This outcome was completely beyond his expectations.
Ray hadn’t even shown his face, yet they’d been toyed with to a miserable degree. The situation had spiraled far beyond what he’d planned, leaving him at a loss.
For a moment, his head throbbed.
“Let’s go back and get umbrellas!” he suddenly blurted out.
“Yes, yes, yes!”
Everyone hurried off at once.
Luckily, what had drenched them was diluted toxic hailwater. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been just a bit of pain- they’d be lying on the ground for at least half an hour.
“We need to change out of these wet clothes too.”
“Right, or we’ll freeze to death first.”
They rushed off, and at the same time, the surface team reached the front of Ray’s villa.
“Break the gate!”
The sledgehammer came down–bang! The courtyard gate burst open with ease. The group was instantly encouraged and pressed forward.
They reached a window and swung the hammer again.
Clang!
The impact was so violent that the man’s arms went numb. The sledgehammer slipped from his grip and landed squarely on his foot. He howled, tears streaming down his face.
What the hell?
They shone their flashlights over.
And froze.
Where was the window?
What window?
That was a steel plate.
No one believed it at first. A few
eached out to touch it. The place where a window should have been was
sealed with a thick sto
slab. No wonder that blow had numbed his arms.
Could they still break in? Impossible.
“What now?”
“What do you think? Retreat!”

“Should we try the front door?”
“Are you stupid? If even the windows are sealed with steel, do you think the front door’s unprotected?”
“Pull back! I can’t keep holding this bed over our heads, I’m about to collapse!”
“Same here–and it’s cold and wet. I can feel the toxic water seeping in.”
“Let’s go. This kind of protection was never meant to last outside.”
“Replan!”
They were about to retreat when, suddenly, a second–floor window opened.
Ray’s voice drifted down.
“Since you’re here, there’s no need to leave.”
“Ray!” they shouted in unison, instinctively trying to look up–but the bed blocked their view.
See him or not, they had to get out now. They couldn’t hold on any longer.
Boom!
The bed jolted violently, nearly knocking them all over.
What was that?
