Summer spread her arms and blocked me again, her eyes brimming with fake tears, her face arranged into that perfect little martyr mask.

“Elena Moore, the only reason I ever put up with you was because you took care of my child for five years.”

“But I never thought you’d deliberately ruin him.”

“You taught him to hate his own parents, and now you’re feeding him things he’s allergic to? What exactly were you trying to do?”

Ethan strode in at that exact moment.

He had heard every word.

His face darkened instantly.

In my arms, Aiden suddenly broke into violent coughing fits. His tiny body started convulsing.

That was it.

I snapped.

“The Vincent Vale you keep calling Ethan’s uncle is my husband,” I shouted. “And he is my son’s father.”

“If you keep blocking me from taking him to the hospital, Vincent will make you pay for it!”

Summer answered in that soft, fragile voice of hers, like she was the reasonable one in the room.

“Elena, it’s one thing to say that kind of thing in front of us. Just don’t go repeating it outside.”

“Do you have any idea how much effort Ethan’s put into taking over the Vale family? If Vincent hears that you’re using his name to bluff people, what if he takes it out on Ethan?”

Ethan stepped forward and planted himself squarely in front of me.

“Elena, I’ve clearly indulged you for too long,” he said coldly. “If I don’t teach you a lesson, you’ll never learn when to shut your mouth.”

Then he ripped Aiden out of my arms and shoved him roughly toward Summer.

“Take him.”

A dull thud cracked through the room.
