Chapter 6
He grabbed my wrist tightly. “Summer, don’t say things out of anger. Give me a chance to make this right.”
I jerked my hand free. “Fine. You want a chance? Here it is.”
I pointed to the barred window at the end of the hallway. “Jump out of that window, and then I’ll believe you’re serious.”
Luca’s face went pale.
I stepped closer and sneered. “What’s wrong? Scared?”
Of course he was.
Don Vitiello, king of the city, with a new wife and an entire family empire to run. How could he risk his life for
a prostitute’s illegitimate child?
I walked into the hospital room and locked the door behind me.
From that night on, Luca became a regular presence at the hospital.
He replaced Elio’s attending physician with a whole team of specialists and paid every bill.
I rented an apartment right next to the hospital so I could push my father’s wheelchair there without crossing
the street.
Luca often stood outside the room, holding a bag of expensive toys, pacing back and forth but never
stepping inside.
After his first round of chemotherapy, Elio asked, “Mom, why is the bad man still outside?”
I brushed his hair gently. “Because he has nothing better to do.”
I would never let Elio know Luca was his father.
In the days that followed, Luca tried to apologize.
He even bought me an admission slot for the music program I had once dreamed of attending.
I tore the acceptance letter into pieces.
He knelt down and begged. “I’ll do anything. Just let me see my son.”
I kicked him. “Does your precious Bianca know you’re here?”
He fell silent for a moment. “We’re over. She found out about Elio.”
I raised an eyebrow. “You dumped her? After she destroyed her life for you? You’re unbelievable, Luca.”
“No! I… I found out some things. I reopened the investigation.”
