Chapter 4
Kristen stared at me in disbelief, her fingers tightening around Deacon’s hand.
But Deacon lowered his head and snapped at her, his voice laced with restrained anger.
“Nina is right. Enough.”
A flicker of displeasure crossed Kristen’s face, but she quickly shifted into an affectionate pout, slipping her arms around
him. “Oh, don’t be so dramatic, Don. It was just a bit of banter.”
“Deacon, meeting her like this must be fate. Why don’t we help Nina? Please?” She rose on her toes and kissed him again.
‘Let me help her, won’t you?”
Deacon looked helpless, then turned to me. “Nina, Kristen has talked about you all these years. She always said you were
her role model. She really doesn’t mean harm.”
Seeing I didn’t respond, Kristen gave a sugary smile. “I’m joining the panel for a piano reality show soon. If you don’t
mind, I can get you a contestant spot. I’ll look after you as a judge.”
I couldn’t stop the quiet, humorless laugh that escaped me. So that was her idea of helping me, dragging me onto
national television as her stepping stone?
What she didn’t know was that the entire show had been created by my husband for me. And I was the
still-unannounced international head judge who would be appearing at the premiere.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw John, Chance’s driver, pulling up to the curb.
I brushed the dirt they had gotten on my clothes and said evenly. “No need. And if there’s nothing else, let’s not meet
again.”
I stepped away, but Kristen suddenly grabbed my arm, her tone probing. “Nina, where do you live? My husband can drive
you.’
I shook my head and walked straight toward John’s car.
Kristen watched thoughtfully, then tugged Deacon’s sleeve to stop him from following me. “Deacon. Nina must be
married.
“You saw that, didn’t you? Her husband came to pick her up. She lowered her voice, almost sympathetic. “Even though he looks older, he probably treats her well.’
For the first time, Deacon shook off her hand violently. He strode to the car, yanked the door open and blocked it from closing.
His voice was ice-cold, his eyes turbulent.
“Nina, is this your husband? This is what you meant by living well? You married a man like him? Has your self-respect eroded so far that you’d settle for this?”

“He doesn’t deserve you. Divorce him. If you don’t have enough money, I’ll send it.”
I opened my mouth, then suddenly felt ridiculous. Why explain anything to him?
I simply pushed his hand away and closed the door. “If you want absolution, give me back the nerves in my fingers.
Anything else means nothing to me.”
And we both knew that was the one thing he could never undo.
Kristen heard that and bit down on her lip. “Nina, if you had just listened to Deacon earlier, you wouldn’t have ended up
like-
“Kristen, that’s enough,” Deacon snapped before she could finish.
I didn’t wait for more. “John, drive.”
On the way home, Maggie called. “Mommy, are you home yet? I made a surprise for you!”
Warmth spread through my chest. She was the one who won the award tonight, yet she was preparing a surprise for me.
“Maggie, Mommy will be home any minute. Wait for me, sweetheart.”
What I didn’t expect was the sight behind me when I stepped out of the car. Deacon’s car had followed us. They had
actually come all the way.
Kristen, clinging to Deacon’s arm, spoke before I could. “Nina, I suggested to follow you. I just wanted to make sure you’re
doing okay.”
She glanced at the mansion behind me, a mocking smile lifting her lips. “Don’t tell me you’re here to teach a late-night
piano lesson.”
She paused, then sighed dramatically. “With your plagiarism record, most people wouldn’t hire you. So I suppose you take
whatever you can get.”
“But do you know who lives here? This is the home of the Don of the Torvani family. You’ve heard of him. right? The
