Chapter 5
I lifted my daughter into my arms and kissed her soft little cheek. “Alright, alright, Mommy’s coming in.”
Behind me, I heard Kristen suck in a sharp breath.
“Nina… this child…” Her voice shook with disbelief. “She’s your daughter?”
I turned, catching the flicker of jealousy and shock twisting across her face. Deacon looked even worse, completely frozen.
eyes locked on the little girl in my arms.
“How old is she?” His voice trembled.
I frowned, unwilling to discuss anything in front of my daughter. “Deacon, I already said it. We won’t be seeing each
other again. And this is private property. Please leave.”
Maggie tilted her head, staring at them with innocent curiosity. “Mommy, who are these man and woman?”
Kristen’s expression soured instantly at Maggie’s voice. She tightened her grip on Deacon’s arm, wanting to say
something, but the villa doors opened before she could.
“Maggie? What are you rushing for?”
A voice like aged bourbon, smooth, dark, and dangerous echoed from inside. My heart jumped. Chance. He wasn’t
supposed to be back until tomorrow.
The moment Maggie heard his voice, she wriggled excitedly. “Daddy! Daddy!”
She cupped my face and nuzzled me. “Mommy, that’s the surprise I made for you!”
Just then, a tall figure stepped out of the villa.
Chance wore a simple cashmere sweater, but even in casual clothes he radiated that effortless, commanding presence of
Boston’s true mafia king.
He walked straight to us, wrapped an arm around my shoulders, and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “My trip ended early.
I wanted to come home sooner for you and Maggie.”
His voice was soft, warm, full of quiet affection. A long-dormant warmth flickered back to life in my chest.
Seven years, and he had always been like this, steady, loyal, giving me a warmth I could fall into without fear.
“A surprise?’ he murmured at my ear. I nodded, smiling so wide my eyes curved like crescents.
Only then did Chance notice the two people standing behind us. His gaze swept over Deacon and Kristen. His brows lifted
slightly. “And you are?”
Deacon’s expression had darkened to something almost volcanic. He stared at Chance’s arm around me. lips pressed in a
hard, colorless line.
Chapter 5
Kristen, quicker to react. put on a polished smile. ‘D-Don Torvani, so you’re Nina’s husband.”
“Oh-allow me to introduce myself. I’m Kristen Hart, and this is my husband, Don Deacon Carnera of the Carnera
family.”
“We’re old acquaintances of Nina’s. We happened to meet her today, so we offered her a ride.”
Chance’s expression cooled instantly. His arm tightened protectively around me. “So it’s you two. My wife told me about
you.”
He paused, then gave a distant, polite smile, one that held nothing warm in it. “But since you belong to the past, there’s
no need for further contact.”
John, please escort these trespassers from the grounds.”
