He pointed toward the darkness beyond the marina.

“We lose this operation, we lose the money that keeps our territory protected. We lose our leverage. Then the people who hate us start carving us apart. You think they’ll show mercy? They won’t. They’ll come for everything. Our businesses. Our territory. Our people. They’ll pick our bones clean.”

I wanted to tell him it didn’t matter anymore. Raphael was coming, and sooner or later, everything they’d done was going to come crashing down around them.

“No,” I shook my head, “You stopped being my father a long time ago.”

Something flickered across his face but it was gone almost instantly.

I looked away, the yacht’s engine grew louder. Leone moved toward the controls and spoke to one of the men waiting near the cabin.

“Cast off.”

The ropes were pulled free, the boat began sliding away from the dock. I watched the marina slowly move behind us, the lights became smaller, the city disappeared into the darkness. Ahead of us was nothing but black water and somewhere beyond it was the island.

Somewhere on that island was Dr. Vance.

The man who had strapped me down, the man who had treated my brain like a puzzle, the man who had watched me suffer and written down the results.

I pulled at the restraints around my wrists. I didn’t need to fight them right now. I needed to be patient.

All I had to do was wait for the right moment, get myself free, and find something I could use as a weapon.

Leone sat across from me. Dad was beside him. The engine roared beneath our feet, drowning out almost everything except the slap of the water against the hull.

I kept my eyes on the black water outside, the farther we went, the darker it became. My heart beat faster. I shifted against the seat and tested the restraints again.

I looked at Leone, “How long?”

He didn’t answer.

I raised my voice, “How fucking long?”

“About forty minutes.”

I looked outside for a long time. At first, I saw nothing, then a dark shape appeared beyond the mist.

An island.

It was larger than I expected.

A rocky shoreline emerged from the darkness, covered in thick trees. A narrow strip of lights ran farther inland almost hidden behind the trees.

The boat slowed, the engine dropped to a low growl. I watched the dock approach. Two men were waiting there, armed.

Leone stood, “Get ready.”

I looked at him, “For what?”

He gave me a cold smile, “You’re about to meet Dr. Vance.”

My stomach twisted, the boat bumped against the dock. One of the men caught the railing and secured the line.

Leone moved toward me.

I immediately pulled away, “Don’t fucking touch me.”

“You’re coming.”

“I can walk.”

“Then walk.”

He grabbed my arm anyway.

I fought him, “Get away from me!”

He dragged me toward the exit while I dug my heels into the floor. Dad followed behind us. The moment the cabin door opened, cold night air hit my face.

I looked toward the island and something inside me went very still.

Somewhere beyond those trees was the man who had spent years taking pieces of my life and calling it science.

Dr. Arthur Vance.

I had spent years trying to forget his face, now I was going back to him. It didn’t seem real for a second. Leone pulled me onto the dock. My shoes hit the wet wood. I stumbled but caught myself.

Two guards moved closer. I looked at them, then at the dark path leading inland.

My fear was still there, but beneath it, something else was growing, something hotter, something darker.

The moment we reached the end of the dock, Dad stopped.
