Fiona had never thought she would hear an apology from him like this, from a man who still didn't have the memories of that past life.
For a moment, too many things tangled together inside her.
"Lord Soren only married me because of a debt of gratitude. There's no need to take it to heart," she said after steadying herself.
"No matter why I married you, you were still my wife. A husband treating his wife that way was wrong. And the person I am now isn't as cold as I was in the last life."
"Lord Soren should go back to the Zonfrillo Estate first," Fiona said, lowering her eyes.
Soren knew this was not something she could set aside in a single day.
If his apology before had only come from seeing how unhappy she had been in the estate, then now there was much more of his own blame mixed into it.
"Mm. Thank you for talking sense into me today, Ms. Fiona," Soren said.
"Right. About me saving Lord Soren's life—I still hope Lord Soren can keep most of that hidden. Just say I happened to give Lord Soren a ride on the way, and that I didn't recognize Lord Soren."
Soren agreed at once. "You put yourself in danger to save me. That was never something that should get out. We'll do it your way."
From across the lakeside, Mrs. Niven and Joanna watched them for a long while.
"Is there something off about the way Lord Soren's looking at Fiona?" Mrs. Niven said at last. "Why does he look so... soft?"
Usually, Lord Soren acted like he wanted twenty miles between himself and everybody else.
Today, he didn't seem to care about that at all.
Joanna nodded. "He really does."
They were both married women. They could tell when a man's manner had changed.
The way Lord Soren looked right then, if Fiona said she wanted to marry him, the red bridal sedan would probably be ready by tomorrow.
"Lord Soren holds power in the Zonfrillo Estate now too. If Fiona married over there, that might not be a bad thing." Joanna was clearly thinking about her son and her son-in-law.
It wasn't exactly decent, but maybe it was worth the risk.
If Lord Soren could handle the Niven family's reputation, then what was the problem?
Mrs. Niven frowned. "Xavier is a good child too. Don't go ruining the Niven family's name. Compared to the second branch, you're the one with no sense at all.
If you want Aiden to have a good future, then let him work for it and do real things. You're always thinking about slipping through the back door. No wonder the Niven family keeps declining."
Joanna gave an awkward little smile and stopped talking.
But she didn't buy it.
Work hard and do real things? Without someone powerful behind you, what good was that? Besides, taking the easy way in was a whole lot simpler.
