Jim had simply stared at Marcus, his expression blank. He did not answer, and he made no move to get up. He did not even blink.
He had watched Marcus for a couple of seconds, then quietly turned his head away and went back to staring at the ceiling, lost in thought.
Marcus was suddenly at a loss for words.
The moment he saw Jim’s reaction, his good–looking brows pulled tight into a deep frown. Even that lifeless, worn–out aura around him seemed to pull back a little.
This guy is messing with me, right? He has to be. He was acting like this in the kitchen earlier, and now he is doing it again.
“Are you mute?” he asked, looking half–dead as he stared at Jim. “Because if you are not, then the way you are acting while I am talking to you comes off as rude. It feels like you are doing this on purpose to provoke me.”
Hearing Marcus speak, Jim finally reacted.
He looked at Marcus again and said, “No!”
He had no intention of provoking Marcus. He just did not know how to answer the question. He struggled to make choices and could not decide which room to pick, so he chose none at all. Sleeping on the couch was fine for him. He was not picky.
Marcus glanced at him. “So, you are not mute.”
As long as he can talk and says he is not trying to provoke me, that is enough. As for what he is actually
inking or why he is lying here zoning out instead of picking a room, I cannot be bothered to ask.
He pulled his gaze away, slowly shifted into a more comfortable position, and closed his eyes again. His breathing soon turned steady and even, as if he had already fallen asleep.
When Jim saw that Marcus was no longer speaking, he did not take the initiative to say anything either.
The living room fell back into a strange, heavy silence,
The two grown males lay on opposite sides of the couch like a pair of statues, quiet and unmoving.

Alaric had come downstairs to grab something. The moment he stepped out of the floating elevator and caught sight of the two bodies sprawled across the couch, he broke into a grin.
Back then, it was just Marcus half–dead on that couch, hogging the whole living room. Now we’ve got Jim added to the mix, always one step away from going into sleep mode.
One on the left, one on the right, like a pair of gatekeepers–except real gatekeepers stand there to ward off evil.
These two just lie there, competing over who looks more dead.
Alaric didn’t bother with them. He grabbed what he needed and headed straight back to his
room.
He had been gone for a while, and there were still several experiments waiting for him. He had no time to stand around appreciating their lifeless performance.
Up on the top floor, Emma had just finished her shower. She changed and stepped out, only to see Edric already sitting in her room.
“Edric, you’re here.” The moment she saw him, she ran straight over and threw herself into his
arms.
She tilted her head up with a smile and pressed a quick kiss to his chin. “I was just thinking about heading over to your room after my shower.”
Edric caught her effortlessly as she rushed into him. His arms tightened around her, pulling her slim waist in and locking her firmly against his chest. “I know.”
He lowered his head, brushing the tip of his nose along the curve of her ear. His warm breath spilled over the sensitive side of her neck. “That’s why I came to you.”
His hand moved slowly along her back, fingers grazing through the thin layer of fabric. The heat from his palm felt almost scorching.
The air between them seemed to grow warmer by the second.
Then, Emma felt it. A cool, slick sensation brushed against her ankle.
She glanced down and saw a thick, strikingly beautiful black–purple serpent tail sliding up along her calf. It moved slowly, almost affectionately, before curling loosely around her waist. The cold surface pressed against her warm skin.

She couldn’t help reaching down to touch it. The scales were tight and smooth, the texture unbelievably satisfying.
She ran her fingers over it again, unable to stop herself. “It feels even better than before.”
Edric watched her, the fondness in his eyes practically spilling over.
He took her hand and guided it across those cool scales. The tip of his tail hooked around her fingers, swaying lightly, almost playful, carrying a hint of teasing and temptation.
“As long as you like it…” His voice dropped, rough and low. His throat tightened as he spoke.
Her absentminded touch seemed to trigger something. The tail around her waist suddenly tightened, coiling more firmly.
Edric let out a soft breath and leaned in slightly, resting his chin in the curve of her neck. His cool lips brushed against the pulse at her throat, sending waves of tingling sensation through her body. “Don’t move, Emma…”
He caught the hand that had been stirring trouble along his tail. But instead of stopping her, he guided her fingers further down, sliding slowly to a spot just below the midpoint of his tail. The scales there were darker, deeper in color, glinting with a dangerous purple sheen.
“Right here…” His breath turned hot.
The tip of his tail, which had only been hooked around her fingers, now wrapped around them fully, flexible and deliberate. “Emma, if you keep going, I won’t be able to hold back.”
Emma looked at him. Not a trace of hesitation showed on her expression. Instead, she let out a soft laugh.
Her bright eyes were sparkling like they held starlight. “Then…”
