Emma stiffened in his arms and looked up at him in surprise. “You’re leaving again already? Why are you so busy? Is a war happening?”

“There’s an emergency meeting still in progress.” He nodded. “The Chitinids have been showing unusual activity.”

He didn’t elaborate further. Instead, he leaned forward until his forehead rested lightly against hers.

“I missed you.”

Meeting her gaze with quiet sincerity, he added, “If I didn’t come back to see you, just to hold you for a moment, I might’ve flipped the conference table by midnight.”

Even if it meant carving out a mere thirty minutes, even if all he could do was return home long enough to hold her close and breathe in the familiar comfort of her scent, he still had to come home to her.
